How to Zip and Unzip Files and Folders on Android

You can zip and unzip files and folders on Android using default file manager (the one that comes with your device) or using third-party file manager.

In this post, we will see both in detail. Let's get started.

Default File Manager

Keep in mind that not all the phone's default file manager have the option to do this task. If your device doesn't have the option to do this task, then go ahead with the third-party file manager.

With that said, let's see how to do this task with a default file manager (in this instance, I am using Moto G5 Plus).

  • angle-double-right
    Open the file manager.
  • angle-double-right
Go to the location which has the contents you want to zip. Remember that all the contents you want to zip should be in the same place.
  • angle-double-right
Select the contents. Once you have done that, tap on Overflow Menu (three vertical dots). Tap the "Compress" option.
Compress option
  • angle-double-right
In the "Compress" popup, enter the file name, choose the location, and select "Set a password" option and then enter the password if you want the password protected zip file.
  • angle-double-right
Once you set everything as per your preference, tap "OK."

That's all. The zip file is created successfully.

To Open a Zip File:

Tap on the zip file to view the contents of the zip file. Keep in mind that if the zip file is a password protected one, then you need to enter the password while trying to open a file within it.

To Unzip a Zip File:

  • angle-right
Select the zip file you want to unzip.
  • angle-right
Now, tap on Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) > UnZip.
UnZip option
  • angle-right
In the "UnZip" popup, choose the location where you want to extract.
  • angle-right
Tap "OK." Enter the password if the zip file is password protected.

That's it. The zip file is extracted successfully.

The above steps extract the entire zip file. If you want to extract selectively, then here are the steps:

  • angle-double-right
Tap the zip file. Now, you can see its contents.
  • angle-double-right
Select the item(s) that you want to extract.
  • angle-double-right
Tap Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) > UnZip.
  • angle-double-right
In the "UnZip" popup, choose the location you prefer to extract and then tap "OK." Enter the password if the zip file is password protected.

That's it. The item(s) you chose is successfully extracted.

Third-Party File Manager

  • angle-right
Install and open "ES File Explorer File Manager" app.
  • angle-right
Go to the location which contains the files and folders that you want to zip. Keep in mind that all the contents that you want to zip should be in the same place.
  • angle-right
Now, select the contents. Tap Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) at the bottom which is beside "Rename."
  • angle-right
    Tap "Compress."
  • angle-right
Now, you can see "ES Zip Viewer" popup in which you can provide a name for the zip file, choose between "zip" or "7z," set compress level, and set a password for the zip file to make it password protected. Set all the options as per your wish.
  • angle-right
    Tap "OK" in the popup.

That is all. The zip file is created successfully.

Here is how you can open a zip file on Android using ES File Explorer:

Now, you can see "Select" popup. Tap on "ES Zip Viewer" within it.

Select popup

Now, you can see zip file contents. If the zip is a password protected one, then you need to enter the password while trying to open the file within it.

Here is how you can unzip on Android using ES File Explorer:

  • angle-double-right
Find and select the zip file you want to unzip.
  • angle-double-right
Tap Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) at the bottom.
  • angle-double-right
    Tap "Extract to" option.

In the popup, you can see three options:

The zip file name/ - This option creates a folder with the zip file name in the place where the zip file resides and then extract all the contents of the zip file into it.

Current path - This option extracts all the contents of the zip file in the place where the zip file resides.

Choose path - As the name indicates, you can use this option to choose the path you prefer to extract.

  • angle-double-right
In this instance, I am using "Choose path" option.
Extract selected files to popup
  • angle-double-right
Tap "OK" in the popup. Enter the password if the zip file is password protected.

That is all. The zip file is unzipped successfully.

The above steps unzip a zip file entirely. If you want to extract selectively (for instance: a folder from the zip file), here are the steps:

  • angle-right
Open the zip file. Now, you can see the zip file contents.
  • angle-right
Select the item(s) that you want to extract.
  • angle-right
You can see the "Extract" option at the bottom. Tap on it.
  • angle-right
Now, you can see "Extract selected files to" popup in which you can choose the option you prefer. Tap "OK." Provide the password if the zip file is password protected.

That is all. The item(s) you chose is successfully extracted.
