How to Comment on a YouTube Video

Go to YouTube. Sign in, if not already.

Go to the video, you want to comment.

Scroll down until you see the “Add a public comment” field. Click on it.

Enter your comment.

Click on the “Comment” button to post your comment.

Click on “Cancel” if you don’t want to post your comment.

Notes

  • Keep in mind that you can edit and delete your comment.
  • The steps to comment on a YouTube video using YouTube for Android and YouTube for iPhone are almost the same as above (you need to tap “Comments” to see the field mentioned above). You can see the “Send” icon (if you’re on Android) or “send” button (if you’re on iPhone) instead of the “Comment” button, which you need to tap to post the comment.
  • A YouTube channel will be created for your account if you leave a YouTube comment for the first time.
  • Your comments are public, which means everyone can see and reply to it.

How to Make YouTube Comments Bold, Italics and Strike Through

  • To make YouTube comment bold, you need to add * (Asterisk) at the beginning and end of the comment. For instance: *Thanks*
  • To make YouTube comment italics, you need to add _ (Underscore) at the beginning and end of the comment. For instance: _Thanks_
  • To make YouTube comment strike through, you need to add – (Hyphen) at the beginning and end of the comment. For instance: -Thanks-

Notes

  • You can format a letter, word, portion, or whole of YouTube comment.
  • Keep in mind that you need to make sure that there is no text immediately appearing before, between, or after text formatting (for instance: *Thanks*a). Otherwise, it’ll not work.
  • The above steps are for YouTube for Android and YouTube for iPhone. When I try the strike through on YouTube for iPhone, it didn’t work.

How to See Your Comment History on YouTube

Go to this URL. Sign in, if not already.

You see all your YouTube comments.

If you click on the “comment” or “Commented,” then you’ll be taken to that comment.

If you click on “Replied,” then you’ll be taken to that reply.

When you hover your mouse over a comment, you see three vertical dots.

Click on it, and you see two options – “Edit” and “Delete.”

To Edit a YouTube Comment: Click on the “Edit” option. You’ll be taken to the comment, which is ready to edit. Edit the comment as per your liking and then click on “Save.”

Keep in mind that you can see (edited) label beside every edited comment.

The “Delete” option is used to delete a comment.

How to Heart a Comment on YouTube

You can heart a comment or reply (it can be yours or others) on your YouTube video.

Remember, you can heart as many comments as you want. Let’s see how to heart comment on YouTube (web version and app).

PC

Go to YouTube Studio.

Hit the “Comments” in the left sidebar.

Find the comment you want to heart.

Hit the “Heart” icon under it.

To Unheart a YouTube Comment

Find the hearted comment that you want to unheart in the YouTube Studio’s “Comments.”

Hit the “Heart” icon under it.

Alternatively, you can do the above tasks on the YouTube watch page too and here’s how:

Go to your YouTube video, which has the comment that you want to heart.

Find the comment in the “Comments” section.

Hit the “Heart” icon under it.

If you want to unheart, follow the below steps:

Go to the video, which has the hearted comment that you wish to unheart.

Find that comment in the “Comments” section.

Hit the “Heart” icon under it.

Android or iPhone

Open the YouTube app. Hit Library > Your videos. Tap the video, which contains the comment that you want to heart.

Hit “Comments.” Find the comment and then tap the “Heart” icon beneath it.

To Unheart

Open the video, which has the hearted comment that you want to unheart.

Find that comment and then tap the “Heart” icon beneath it.

How to Pin a Comment on YouTube

You can pin a comment (it can be yours or others) on your YouTube video. Keep in mind that the replies can’t be pinned.

The pinned comment will stay on top of the “Comments” section until you unpin it.

It is also important to note that a video can only have a single pinned comment.

If you pin a comment on a video that already has a pinned comment, then the new one replaces the existing one.

Let’s see how to pin a comment on YouTube (web version and app).

PC

Go to YouTube Studio’s “Videos” section.

Hover your mouse over the video, which has the comment you want to pin.

You can see the “YouTube” icon. Hit it.

In the “Comments” section, find the comment you want to pin.

Hover your mouse over it, and you see the three vertical dots. Hit it.

Hit the “Pin” option.

In the confirmation pop-up, hit the “Pin” button.

To unpin a pinned YouTube comment, follow the below steps:

Hover your mouse over the pinned comment, and you see the three vertical dots. Click on it.

Click on the “Unpin” option.

Android or iPhone

Open the YouTube app.

Hit Library > Your videos.

Tap the video, which contains the comment you wish to pin.

Hit “Comments.”

Find the comment and tap the three vertical dots beneath it.

Tap “Pin.” In the confirmation pop-up, hit “Pin.”

Here are the steps to unpin:

Find the pinned comment that you want to unpin.

How to Disable YouTube Comments 

You can turn off comments for your videos (new and existing). You can also disable comments for the “Discussions” tab. 

Let’s see how to do these on the YouTube desktop version. 

How to Disable Comments for YouTube Videos 

Here we’ll see how to do it for new and existing videos. 

Remember, when you turn off comments for existing videos, comments already posted will not be shown in those videos. 

For Existing YouTube Videos 

Go to YouTube Studio. 

Hit “Videos” in the left sidebar. 

Choose the video(s) for which you want to disable comments. 

Note: If you want to disable comments for all YouTube videos, then choose the first checkbox at the top. Now you see the “Select all” link. Click it and all are selected. Go ahead with the next steps. 

Hit “Edit.” 

Hit “Comments.” 

Open the drop-down list and select “Disable comments.” 

Hit “Update Videos” button. 

Select the checkbox in the pop-up. Click on “Update Videos.” 

For New YouTube Videos 

The following steps are to turn off comments for a new YouTube video. 

Make sure you’re in the “Details” tab of the pop-up you see during video uploading. 

Hit “More Options.” 

In the “Comments and ratings” section, open the “Comment visibility” drop-down list. 

Select “Disable comments.” 

That’s all. 

If you want to turn off comments for all the new YouTube videos, follow these steps: 

Go to YouTube Studio. 

Hit “Settings” in the left sidebar. 

In the pop-up, hit “Upload defaults.” 

Navigate to the “Advanced settings” tab. 

Beneath “Comments,” you see a drop-down list. 

Open it and select “Disable comments.” 

Hit “Save.” 

Let’s see an alternative way to disable comments for your new YouTube videos. 

Go to YouTube Studio. 

Hit “Settings” in the left sidebar. 

In the pop-up, hit “Community.” 

Navigate to the “Defaults” tab. 

Open the drop-down list beneath “Comments on your new videos” and select “Disable comments.” 

Hit “Save.” 

How to Disable Comments in Discussions Tab

Go to YouTube Studio. 

Hit “Settings” in the left sidebar. 

In the pop-up, hit “Community.” 

Navigate to the “Defaults” tab. 

Open the drop-down list beneath “Comments on your Discussions tab.” Select “Disable comments.”

How to Delete a YouTube Comment

You can delete your comment to your video and other people’s video. You can also remove other people’s comments to your video.

Remember that these apply for replies too.

You can use any of the following methods to delete your YouTube comment on your video and other people’s video.

Method #1

Go to your YouTube comment history. Sign in, if not already.

Hover the mouse over the comment you want to delete.

You see three vertical dots. Click on it.

Click on the “Delete” option.

In the confirmation pop-up, click “Delete.”

Method #2

Go to the video where you left the comment.

Find your comment and hover the mouse over it.

You see three vertical dots. Click on it.

Delete Other People Comment on Your Video

Method #1

Go to YouTube Studio. Sign in, if not already.

Find the comment you want to remove.

Hit three vertical dots beneath that one.

Go to the video on YouTube, which contains the comment you want to delete.

Find the comment.

Hover your mouse over it.

You see three vertical dots. Click on it.
