How to Add WhatsApp Chat Shortcut to Android Home Screen

You can add the shortcut of a WhatsApp chat (contact or group) to the home screen of your Android device, and here’s how:

  1. ​Open WhatsApp.
  2. In the Chats tab, tap the chat you want.
  3. In case, if you don’t have a chat for the contact you prefer in the Chats tab, then tap on New chat icon at the bottom. And then tap on the contact you prefer.
  4. Tap the three vertical dots at the top right.
  5. Tap More which you can find beneath Wallpaper.
  6. Hit Add shortcut which you can find beneath Export chat.

  1. In the Add to Home screen pop-up, tap Add option.

That’s all. Now, you can see the chat shortcut on the home screen of your Android device.

Notes:

  • Alternate way: Long press the chat. Hit three vertical dots at the top right. Tap Add chat shortcut option. In the pop-up, tap Add.
  • Tap on the chat shortcut to open the chat.
  • If you wish, you can change the name and icon of the chat shortcut. Also, note that you can remove the shortcut.

How to Mark WhatsApp Chats as Read or Unread (Android)

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Select the chat(s) that you want to mark as read or unread.
  3. Hit the three vertical dots at the top.
  4. Now, you can see Mark as unread (if the selected chat(s) doesn’t have any unread message) or Mark as read (if the chosen conversation(s) have any unread message or already marked as unread). Tap it.

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Chats if you’re not in it already.
  3. Slide the chat you want to mark as read or unread to the right side completely. Note that if the conversation has any unread message or already marked as unread, then that chat will be marked as read. Otherwise, it’ll be marked as unread.

Alternate Way

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Chats if you’re not in it already.
  3. Slide the chat you want to mark as read or unread to the right.
  4. Now, you can view Unread (if the selected chat doesn’t have any unread message) or Read (if the chosen conversation has any unread message or already marked as unread). Hit it.

Introduction to Pin Chat Feature

WhatsApp’s Pin chat feature lets you pin chats (contact and group). If you pin a chat, you can access it easily and quickly since it stays at the top of the Chats tab.

Remember:

  • The pinned chats will remain at the top until you unpin them.
  • If you see a Pin symbol on the chat, then it means that it is a pinned chat.
  • You can pin only a maximum of 3 conversations.

With that said, let’s see the steps to pin.

How to Pin WhatsApp Chat (Android)

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. If you wish to pin a chat, then long-press it.
  3. If you wish to pin many conversations, then long-press a chat you want to pin. And then hit remaining chats that you wish to pin.
  4. Now, you can see the Pin icon at the top. Hit it.

To Unpin

Select the pinned chat(s) that you want to unpin. Hit the Remove pin icon at the top.

How to Pin WhatsApp Chat (iPhone)

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Chats if you’re not in it already.
  3. Swipe the chat you want to pin to the right.
  4. Now, you can see the Pin option besides Read or Unread. Hit it.

To Unpin

Swipe the pinned chat you want to unpin to the right. Hit Unpin.

Introduction to WhatsApp’s Reply Feature

WhatsApp’s Reply feature lets you quote WhatsApp message and reply to that quoted message.

It is useful, especially when you’re receiving many messages continuously in a conversation, and you want to reply to a specific message.

How to Quote a Message on WhatsApp for Android

  1. Open the WhatsApp chat (contact or group) and then long-press the message you want to quote.
  2. Tap on the Reply icon, which you can find beside the Star icon.

  1. Now, you can see the preview of the quoted message which has the name of the sender at the top. And the cursor at the compose box.

How to Quote a Message on WhatsApp for iPhone

  1. Open the WhatsApp chat (contact or group) and long-press the message you like to quote.
  2. In the pop-up, choose the Reply option, which you can find between Star and Forward.

Important Things (Apply for Android and iPhone)

  • An alternate way to quote a WhatsApp message: Slide the message you want to quote to the right side. The rest is the same as the above steps (3 and 4).
  • Not only text, but you can also quote any media type.
  • You can’t quote more than a message at a time.
  • Once you send the quoted message, tap on it, and you’ll see its original message in the conversation.
  • If you don’t want to send the quoted message while seeing the preview, then click X in the preview.
  • You can quote not only the message of others, but you can quote your message too.

Difference Between Clearing and Deleting Chats

  • Here’s the difference between clearing and deleting chats: the former will not delete the chat from Chats tab and the latter will.

How to Delete Single or Many WhatsApp Chats on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp for Android.
  2. Long press the chat(s) of the contact that you want to remove.
  3. Hit the Trash can icon which you can find between Pin and Mute at the top.

  1. In the pop-up, select Delete media in these chats if you want to remove media of the conversation from your device. Otherwise, unselect it.
  2. Tap Delete option in the pop-up.

How to Delete All WhatsApp Chats at Once on Android

The below steps will remove all WhatsApp contacts chat and clear all group chats at once. Remember that these steps can also delete media of all chats from your device.

  1. Launch WhatsApp.
  2. Hit three vertical dots at the top.
  3. Tap Settings, which you can find beneath Starred messages.
  4. Hit on Chats, which you can find between Account and Notifications.
  5. Tap Chat history, which you can find beneath Chat backup.
  6. Hit on Delete all chats which you can find beneath Clear all chats option.

  1. In the pop-up, select Delete media in chats option if you want to remove media of all conversations from your device. Otherwise, unselect it.
  2. Hit Delete option in the pop-up.

How to Delete Single or Many WhatsApp Conversations on iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Hit Chats at the bottom if you’re not in it already.
  3. Tap the Edit option at the top left.
  4. Hit the chat of the contact(s) you like to remove and then tap Delete at the right bottom.

How to Delete All Conversations at Once on iPhone

If you want to remove all WhatsApp contacts chat and clear all group chats at once, then follow the below steps.

  1. Launch WhatsApp for iPhone.
  2. Hit Settings at the bottom if you’re not in it already.
  3. Tap Chats option, which you can find between Account and Notifications.
  4. Hit on Delete All Chats option, which you can find beneath the Clear All Chats option.

  1. Provide the number you’ve used to create your WhatsApp account and then hit Delete All Chats option.

Introduction to WhatsApp Mute Feature

WhatsApp Mute feature lets you mute the contact and group chats.

When you mute a chat, then it’ll not play a notification sound, vibrate, and show the notification when it receives a message.

Keep in mind that the muted chat will remain the same until you unmute it or the chosen duration expires.

How to Mute WhatsApp Chat (Android)

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. If you want to mute a chat, then long-press it. If you want to mute many conversations, then long-press the one you want to mute and then hit the remaining ones you want to mute. If you want to mute all chats, then long-press a conversation, hit three vertical dots, and then tap Select all.
  3. Now, at the top, you can see the Mute icon. Tap it.
  4. In the pop-up, choose the duration you prefer. The durations are – 8 hours, 1 week, and 1 year.
  5. Select Show notifications, if you want the notifications to be shown when you receive a message from the selected chat(s). Else, leave it intact.

  1. Hit Ok.

Or, you can mute a single chat using the below steps too.

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Hit the chat you want to mute.
  3. Tap the name at the top.
  4. Hit on Mute notifications.
  5. Choose the duration you want. Select the Show notifications, if you prefer.
  6. Tap on Ok.

Remember that in the Chats tab, if you see a Mute symbol on the chat, then that’s a muted chat.

Let’s see how to unmute a muted WhatsApp chat.

In the WhatsApp, select the muted chat(s) you want to unmute. Hit the Volume icon at the top.

Or, you can unmute a single conversation using the below step too.

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Hit the muted chat you want to unmute.
  3. Tap the name at the top.
  4. Hit the toggle switch beside Mute notifications.

How to Mute WhatsApp Chat (iPhone)

  1. Launch WhatsApp.
  2. Slide the chat you want to mute to the left.
  3. Hit More > Mute.
  4. In the pop-up, you can see three durations as options – 8 hours, 1 week, and 1 year.
  5. Hit the one you prefer.

Note: In the Chats tab, if you see a Mute symbol on a chat, then that’s a muted chat.

To Unmute

  1. Slide the muted chat you want to unmute to the left.
  2. Hit More > Unmute.

How to Hide WhatsApp Chat (Android)

You can hide WhatsApp chat (contact or group) from the Chats tab and here’s how you can do that on Android:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. If you want to hide a chat, then long-press it. If you want to hide multiple conversations, then long-press the one you wish to hide and then hit the remaining ones you prefer to hide. If you want to hide all chats, then long-press a conversation and then tap three vertical dots at the top and then hit Select all.
  3. Now, hit the Archive icon, which you can find beside the Mute icon.

That’s it. The chat(s) you’ve chosen are hidden successfully.

Alternatively, you can hide all chats at once using the below steps:

Hit three vertical dots > Settings > Chats > Chat history > Archive all chats (you can see this option only if all the conversations are not archived). In the confirmation pop-up, tap Ok.

Note: The hidden conversation automatically gets unhide if it receives a message or a message is sent from it.

To See Hidden Chats

In the Chats tab, you can see Archived (X). X denotes the number of conversations you’ve hidden. Hit it, and you can see all your archived conversations.

To Unhide Hidden Conversations

  1. Select the hidden chat(s) you wish to unhide. You can select the conversation(s) in the same way you do for the archive.
  2. Hit the Unarchive icon at the top.

That’s it. The archived conversation(s) you’ve selected are unarchived successfully.

Alternatively, you can unarchive all chats at once using the below steps:

Tap three vertical dots > Settings > Chats > Chat history > Unarchive all chats (you can see this option only if all the conversations are archived). In the confirmation pop-up, hit Ok.

How to Hide WhatsApp Chat (iPhone)

  1. Launch WhatsApp.
  2. Hit the Chats tab at the bottom if you’re not already in it.
  3. Slide the chat you want to archive to the left.
  4. Hit the Archive option.

Alternate Ways

Slide the chat you want to archive to the left side completely and it’ll be archived.

Long press the chat you want to archive and you can see Archive option on the menu. Hit it.

If you want to hide single, many or all WhatsApp chats, follow the below steps:

  1. Open WhatsApp and then hit the Chats tab.
  2. Hit the Edit option at the top left.
  3. Select the chat(s) you want.
  4. Hit the Archive option at the bottom left.

Archive All Chats

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Settings > Chats > Archive All Chats.
  3. In the pop-up, hit Archive All.

To See Archived Chats

  1. Place your finger on the blank space between Broadcast Lists and New Group.
  2. Swipe down twice.
  3. Now you can see Archived Chats. Hit it.

Unarchive Chats

Go to the Archive Chats screen using the above steps and then follow any of the below methods:

  1. Slide the chat to the left completely.
  2. Long-press the chat you want to unarchive. You can see the Unarchive option. Hit it.
  3. Slide the chat to the left and you can see the Archive option. Hit it.

Unarchive All Chats

Note: you can follow the steps only if all your chats are archived.

Launch WhatsApp. Hit on Settings > Chats > Unarchive All Chats.

How to Clear All Messages on WhatsApp (Android)

Here’s how you can clear all the messages of a single chat or all chats at once on WhatsApp for Android:

Single Chat

  1. ​Open WhatsApp.
  2. Open the chat (contact or group) you want.
  3. Tap three vertical dots at the top > More > Clear chat.
  4. Now, you can see anyone of this confirmation pop-up:

  1. ​You can see the first one if you don’t have a starred message in the chat, and you can see the second one if you have a starred message in the chat.
  2. ​Now, you can see Delete media in this chat option, which is selected by default. You can leave it intact if you want the media from the chat to be deleted from your phone. Else unselect the option.
  3. If you see the first one, then tap Clear.
  4. If you see the second one, tap Clear Messages (if you want to clear starred messages too, then select the Delete starred messages option before tapping Clear Messages option).

All Chats

  1. ​Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap three vertical dots at the top > Settings > Chats > Chat history.
  3. Tap Clear all chats option.
  4. In the confirmation pop-up, you can see:
  • Delete media in chats – select this option if you want the media from all the chats to be removed from your phone.
  • Delete starred messages – select this option if you want to delete all your starred messages.
  • Clear Messages – clear all the messages from all the chats if the above option is selected. Else, all the messages from all chats will be cleared except starred messages.
  • Cancel – close this confirmation pop-up.
  1. ​Choose the option as per your need.

How to Clear All Messages on WhatsApp (iPhone)

Here’s how you can clear all messages of a single chat or all chats at once on WhatsApp for iPhone:

Single Chat

Method #1

  1. Open WhatsApp. Hit the Chats tab at the bottom.
  2. Slide the chat to the left.
  3. Hit More > Clear Chat.
  4. Now, you can see a pop-up with the following options:
  • Delete all except starred – this one will clear all the messages of chat except the starred messages in it. And remember, you can only see this option if the chat has at least a starred message.
  • Delete all messages – this one will clear all the messages of the chat.
  1. Hit the one you prefer.

Method #2

  1. Launch the WhatsApp.
  2. Open the chat you want.
  3. Hit the name at the top.
  4. Hit the Clear Chat option.
  5. Now, you can see a pop-up with the following options:
  • Delete all except starred – this one will clear all the messages of chat except the starred messages in it. And remember, you can only see this option if the chat has at least a starred message.
  • Delete all messages – this one will clear all the messages of the chat.
  1. Hit the one you prefer.

All Chats

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Hit on Settings > Chats > Clear All Chats.
  3. Now, you can see the message stating that clearing your chats will delete message history on your phone and delete all sent and received media.
  4. If you’re okay with that, enter the phone number associated with your WhatsApp account and then hit the Clear All Chats option.
