How to Customize WhatsApp Notification Sound and Ringtone (Android)

How to Disable Vibration on WhatsApp

By default, your device vibrates when you receive a WhatsApp message or call.

Let’s see how to disable vibration for a single and all chat.

How to Disable Vibration for Single Chat

Launch WhatsApp app.

Tap contact or group chat for which you want vibration turned off.

Tap name on top. Select “Custom notifications” between “Mute notifications” and “Media visibility.”

Tap “Use custom notifications.”

Tap Vibrate in the “Message notifications” section and select “Off.”

To turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls – Select Vibrate in the “Call notifications” section. Choose “Off.”

Tap “Use custom notifications” to revert.

How to Disable Vibration for All Contacts and Groups

​Open WhatsApp. Tap three vertical dots on top right > Settings > Notifications.

To disable vibration for all contacts, tap “Vibrate” in the “Messages” section and select “Off” from the pop-up.

To turn off the vibration for all group chats, tap “Vibrate” in the “Groups” section and select “Off.”

To turn off the vibration for WhatsApp calls: Choose the “Vibrate” option in the “Calls” section. Select “Off.”

Follow the above steps to revert. However, rather than selecting “Off,” choose “Default.”

How to Enable WhatsApp Popup Notification

By default, WhatsApp’s popup notification is disabled. Let’s see how to enable it for single and all conversations.

Note: Android version 9 and older support this feature.

How to Enable Popup Notification for Single Chat

Open WhatsApp chat (contact or group) for which you want to enable popup notification.

Tap name at the top. Select “Custom notifications” between “Mute notifications” and “Media visibility.”

Tap “Use custom notifications,” then “Popup notification” in the “Message notifications” section.

In the pop-up, select an option except “No popup.” Refer below if you’re unfamiliar with those options.

Note: To revert, turn off “Use custom notifications.”

How to Turn on Popup Notification for All Contacts

Open WhatsApp. Tap three vertical dots at the top > Settings > Notifications.

To enable the popup notification for all your contact chat, follow these steps:

Tap “Popup notification” in the “Messages” section. You can see a pop-up with these four options:

  • No popup – Turn off popup notification.
  • Only when screen “on” – Popup notification only appears when the screen is on.
  • Only when screen “off” – Popup notification only appears when the screen is off.
  • Always show popup – Popup notification appears regardless of screen status.

Choose the one you prefer except “No popup.”

Note: To revert, follow the steps above and select “No popup.”

How to Customize WhatsApp Notification Sound and Ringtone

By default, WhatsApp sets notification sound and ringtone on your Android device as notification sound and ringtone for all WhatsApp contacts and groups.

Let’s see how to customize them for a single contact, a single group, and all contacts and groups.

​For Single Contact

​Launch WhatsApp. Tap the “New chat” icon, then your desired contact.

Tap name on top, then “Custom notifications.” Select “Use custom notifications.”

In the “Message notifications” section, tap “Notification tone.” Tap “OK” after selecting the notification tone.

In the “Call notifications” section, tap “Ringtone.” Select ringtone and tap “OK.”

Notes:

  • Choosing None in the above steps means you’re disabling it.
  • To turn off the custom notification sound and ringtone, uncheck “Use custom notifications.”

For the Single Group

Open WhatsApp group. Tap name on top.

Tap “Custom notifications,” then “Use custom notifications.”

Tap “Notification tone.” Choose notification tone and tap “OK.”

Notes:

  • Choosing None in the above steps means you’re disabling it.
  • Uncheck “Use custom notifications” to disable the group’s custom notification sound.
  • WhatsApp has no option to customize group ringtone, and it uses its default ringtone for the group.

For All Contacts and Groups

​Tap three vertical dots on top of WhatsApp. Select Settings > Notifications.

Tap “Notification tone” in the “Messages” section to set a notification tone for all contacts. Select notification tone, and tap “OK.”

Tap “Notification tone” in the “Groups” section to set a notification tone for all groups. Select notification tone, and tap “OK.”

Tap “Ringtone” in the “Calls” section to set the ringtone for all contacts. Choose ringtone and tap “OK.”

Notes:

  • Choosing None in the above steps means you’re disabling it.
  • To revert, follow the steps above. Then select “Default” one for contact and group notification sound and ringtone.
  • WhatsApp has no option to customize group ringtone, and it uses its default ringtone for the group.

How to Reset Notification Settings

Follow the steps below to reset all your WhatsApp notification settings:

Tap three vertical dots on the top right corner of WhatsApp.

Select Settings > Notifications > three vertical dots in the top right corner.

Tap “Reset notification settings.”

On the pop-up, you can see this message:

Reset all notification settings, including custom notification settings for your chats?

Tap Reset, and that’s all.

Other Notification Settings

Here are other settings you can configure if you wish.

When sending or receiving messages while you are on the chat screen, you hear sounds by default.

Follow these steps if you don’t want those sounds:

Tap three vertical dots on the top right corner of WhatsApp.

Select Settings > Notifications. Turn off “Conversation tones.”

Note: To revert, turn it on.

By default, WhatsApp sets white light for messages received by contact and group chats. Remember that all phones don’t support light.

Follow these steps to change or disable light:

Go to “Notifications” (steps are on this section top).

To change or disable it for contact chats, select Light in the Messages section. Choose your desired color or None to disable the light.

To change or disable it for group chats, select Light in the “Groups” section. The remaining steps are the same as above.

Note: Here’s how to do this task for single contact or group chat: open chat and tap name on top. Select Custom notifications. Enable “Use custom notifications.” Select Light. Change or disable the light.

By default, when you receive a new message, you’ll see a notification preview at the top of the screen. Here’s how to stop that:

Go to “Notifications” (steps are on this section top). To do it for contact chats, turn off “Use high priority notifications” in the Messages section.

For group chats, turn off the same option in the “Groups” section.

Note: Here’s how to do this task for single contact or group chat: open chat. Tap name on top. Select Custom notifications. Enable “Use custom notifications.” Turn off “Use high priority notifications.”
