A Guide on WhatsApp Group Settings (Android and iPhone)

Change WhatsApp Group Name

Android

​Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. ​Hit three vertical dots at the top.

Tap on “Group info,” which you can find between “Add chat shortcut,” and “Mark as unread.”

​Hit on the “Pencil” icon beside the group name.

In the “Enter new subject” screen, provide the group name as per your wish. Keep in mind that a maximum of twenty-five characters is allowed as the group name.

Tap the Ok button at the bottom.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Hit the “More” option, which you can find beside the “Archive.”

Tap the “Group Info” option, which you can find between “Mute” and “Export Chat.” Hit the group name.

Now, provide the name you prefer for the group. Remember that you can input the maximum of twenty-five characters for the group name. Tap the “Save” option at the top right.


Add or Change WhatsApp Group Icon

Android

Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. Hit three vertical dots at the top.

Tap on “Group info” which you can find between “Add chat shortcut” and “Mark as unread.” Tap the area above the group name.

If you’re changing the group icon, tap the current one, and then hit the “Pencil” icon at the top.

In the pop-up, you can see three or four options (depending on you add or change):

Remove icon, Camera, Search Web, and Gallery.

Pick the one you prefer from the last three options. Here, I’m choosing the last one. Pick up the photo you prefer.

Now, hit the “Rotate” option if you want to rotate the image. Use the handles and move the transparent grid on the screen to cover the part of the image you want to display.

Tap the “Done” option at the bottom.

To Remove Group Icon

Hit the current group icon as mentioned above, tap the “Pencil” icon at the top. Choose the “Remove icon” option, and tap “Remove” in the pop-up.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Hit the “More” option.

Tap the “Group Info” option, which you can find between “Mute” and “Export Chat.” Tap the “Camera” icon above the group name.

Now, you can see three or four options in the pop-up (depending on you add or change):

Reset Icon, Take Photo, Choose Photo, and Search Web.

Pick the one you prefer from the last three options. Here, I’m choosing the “Choose Photo” option.

Choose the image you prefer. Move the picture to bring the part of the image you want to display within the circle. Hit the “Choose” option at the bottom.

To Remove Group Icon

Hit the “Camera” icon as mentioned above. Tap the “Reset Icon” option from the pop-up. Hit the “Reset Icon” option.


Add or Change WhatsApp Group Description

Android

​Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. Hit three vertical dots at the top. Tap on “Group info.”

Now, you can see the “Add group description” or “Description” option. Tap on it. ​Enter or change the description as per your wish.

Keep in mind that this description will be visible to group participants and people invited to the group. ​Hit the Ok button.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Hit the “More” option. Tap the “Group Info” option.

Tap the “Add group description” or “description,” which you can find beneath the WhatsApp group name. Now, provide or change the group description as per your liking.

But remember that it’ll be visible to the group participants and people invited to the group. Tap the “Save” option at the top right.


Allow Admins Only to Change WhatsApp Group Subject, Description, and Icon

By default, any group participant can change group subject, description, and icon.

If you prefer to let admins only to change those, then follow the below steps. Remember that you can do this only if you’re an admin of the group.

Android

​Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. ​Hit three vertical dots at the top.

Tap on “Group info” which you can find between Add chat shortcut and Mark as unread. Hit the “Group settings” option.

Tap the “Edit group info” option. In the pop-up, select “Only admins” and tap Ok option.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Hit the “More” option. Tap the “Group Info” option. Hit the “Group Settings” option.

Hit the “Edit Group Info” option, which you can find beneath the “Send Messages” option. In the pop-up at the bottom, hit “Only Admins” option.


Allow Admins Only to Send Messages to WhatsApp Group

By default, any participant can send messages to the group.

But, if you want to allow admins only to send messages to the group, follow the below steps. Remember that you can do this only if you’re an admin of the group.

Android

​Open WhatsApp. ​In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. Tap three vertical dots at the top. Tap on “Group info.”

​Hit the “Group settings” option. ​Tap on the “Send messages” option. In the “Send messages” pop-up, tap on the “Only admins” option. Hit Ok.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Hit “More.” In the pop-up, tap the “Group Info” option.

Tap the “Group Settings” option. Tap the “Send Messages” option, which you can find above “Edit Group Info.” In the pop-up, hit “Only Admins” option.
