How to Add or Change WhatsApp Group Icon, Name, and Description (Android, WhatsApp Web, and iPhone)

How to Change WhatsApp Group Name

Let’s see how to do this task on Android and iPhone.

Android

​In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. ​Tap the three vertical dots at the top.

Select “Group info” between “Add chat shortcut” and “Mark as unread (or Mark as read).”

​Tap the “Pencil” icon beside the group name.

On the “Enter new subject” screen, provide the group name as per your wish. Keep in mind that a maximum of 25 characters is allowed as the group name.

Tap the OK button at the bottom.

iPhone

In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Select “More,” then “Group Info.”

Tap the group name and provide the name you prefer for the group.

Remember that you can input a maximum of 25 characters for the group name. Tap the “Save” option at the top right.

How to Add or Change WhatsApp Group Icon

Let’s see how to do this task on Android and iPhone.

Android

In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. Tap the three vertical dots at the top.

Select “Group info.”

Tap the area above the group name if you’re adding a group icon.

If you’re changing the group icon, tap the current one, then the “Pencil” icon at the top.

In the pop-up, you’ll see these three or four options (based on whether you add or change it): Remove icon, Camera, Search Web, and Gallery.

Pick the one you prefer from the last three options. Here, I’m choosing the last one. Pick the image.

Tap the “Rotate” icon at the bottom to rotate the image. Use the handles and move the transparent grid on the screen to cover the part of the image you want to display.

Tap the “Done” option at the bottom.

To remove the group icon, follow these steps:

Tap the current group icon, then the “Pencil” icon at the top.

Choose the “Remove icon” option, and tap “Remove” in the pop-up.

iPhone

In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Tap the “More” option.

Select the “Group Info” option between “Mute” and “Export Chat.” Tap the “Camera” icon above the group name.

Now, you can see these three or four options in the pop-up (based on whether you add or change it): Reset Icon, Take Photo, Choose Photo, and Search Web.

Pick the one you prefer from the last three options. Here, I’m choosing the “Choose Photo” option.

Choose the image and move it to bring the part of the image you want to display within the circle. Tap the “Choose” option at the bottom.

To remove the group icon, follow these steps:

Tap the “Camera” icon mentioned above.

Select the “Reset Icon” option from the pop-up. Tap the “Reset Icon” option.

How to Add or Change WhatsApp Group Description

Let’s see how to do this task on Android and iPhone.

Android

​Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. Tap the three vertical dots at the top, then the “Group info.”

Now, you can see the “Add group description” or “Description” option. Tap it. ​Enter or change the description as per your wish.

Keep in mind that this description will be visible to group participants and people invited to the group. ​Tap the OK button.

iPhone

In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Select “More,” then the “Group Info” option.

Tap the “Add group description” or current group description beneath the WhatsApp group name. Now, provide or change the group description as per your liking.

Remember that it’ll be visible to the group participants and people invited to the group.

Tap the “Save” option at the top right.

How to Allow Admins Only to Change WhatsApp Group Subject, Description, and Icon

By default, any group participant can change the group subject, description, and icon.

If you prefer only to let admins change those, follow the steps below. Remember that you can only do this if you’re an admin of the group.

Let’s see how to do this task on Android and iPhone.

Android

​In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. ​Tap the three vertical dots at the top.

Select “Group info” between “Add chat shortcut” and “Mark as unread (or Mark as read).”

Tap the “Group settings” option, then the “Edit group info” option.

In the pop-up, select “Only admins” and tap the OK.

Note: You can revert by choosing “All participants.” Ensure to tap OK.

iPhone

In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Select “More,” then the “Group Info” option.

Tap the “Group Settings,” then the “Edit Group Info” option.

In the pop-up at the bottom, tap the “Only Admins” option.

Note: To revert, choose the All Participants option.

How to Allow Admins Only to Send Messages to WhatsApp Group

By default, any participant can send messages to the group.

Follow the steps below to allow only admins to send messages to the group. Remember that you can only do this if you’re an admin of the group.

Android

​​In the “Chats” tab, long-press the group chat. Tap the three vertical dots at the top.

Select “Group info,” then the “Group settings” option. Tap the “Send messages” option.

In the “Send messages” pop-up, tap the “Only admins” option. Tap OK.

Note: You can revert by choosing “All participants.” Ensure to tap OK.

iPhone

In the “Chats” tab, slide the group chat to the left. Select “More.” In the pop-up, tap the “Group Info” option.

Tap the “Group Settings,” then “Send Messages” option, which you can find above the “Edit Group Info.”

In the pop-up, tap the “Only Admins” option.

Note: To revert, choose the All Participants option.

WhatsApp Web

Here you can see how to change the group icon, name, and description.

Also, you’ll see how to allow admins only to send messages and change the icon, name, and description.

Let’s see the steps.

Open the WhatsApp group. Click the group name at the top of the chat.

In the right sidebar, you can see many options. Let’s see the ones to do these tasks.

To change the group name, follow these steps:

Click the Pencil icon beside the current group name.

Change the name as per your liking. Remember that you can input only 25 characters for a group name.

Click on the tick icon. That’s all.

Follow these steps to add or change group description:

Click on the Pencil icon beside the current group name or “Add group description.”

Provide the description and click the tick icon.

Follow these steps to add or change the group icon:

Click the “Add Group Icon” or your current group icon.

Now you can see these options (based on whether you add or change it): View photo, Remove photo, Take photo, and Upload photo.

View photo is to view your current group icon.

Choose the one you prefer from the last-mentioned two options. Here I’m choosing “Upload photo.”

Select the photo and click on the Open button.

Now drag the portion of the image you want to display within the circle. Use the + and – to zoom in and out.

Click on the tick icon.

That’s all.

Note: To remove the group icon, select the Remove photo option. Click Remove in the pop-up.

To allow admins only to send messages and change group icon, name, and description, follow these steps:

Click on the Group Settings.

To only allow admins to send messages to the group, click Send Messages. Choose Only admins, and click the Confirm button.

Note: To revert, choose “All participants.” Ensure to click Confirm.

To only allow admins to change the group name, icon, and description, click Edit group info. Choose Only admins, and click the Confirm button.

Note: To revert, choose “All participants.” Ensure to click Confirm.
