How to Always Start Browser in Private Browsing Mode

In this post, we will see the steps to set up the browsers [Firefox, Chrome, and Opera] to start private browsing mode always. Let’s begin with a quick intro about private browsing mode.

What is Private Browsing Mode?

The private browsing mode is a browsing mode which doesn’t save the following:

  • History
  • Form data
  • Passwords
  • Cookies
  • Temporary files
  • Download history and other data

Limitations of private browsing:

  • The download history won’t be saved in private browsing. But, the downloads you’ve made is saved on your device.
  • The bookmarks you've made in private browsing will be saved.
  • The extensions are disabled by default (except the ones you have allowed to work in private mode).
  • The private browsing mode doesn’t provide a complete anonymous browsing. The ISP or your employer can still track the pages you visit.

Shortcuts for Private Mode

To quickly open private browsing mode in popular browsers, use the following shortcuts:

  • Firefox – Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Chrome [incognito] – Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Opera - Ctrl + Shift + N

Chrome

Steps

  • Find and right click the Chrome shortcut.
  • Select Properties.
  • In the target field, add the “-incognito” [without quotes] at the end.
  • Google Chrome properties
  • Click OK.

Hint:

If you don’t want to do any changes with the existing shortcut, you can create a new one.

  • Right click > New > Shortcut.
  • Append the –incognito at the end of the shortcut location.
  • Name it as “Incognito mode - Chrome” which would be easy to remember it.

Firefox

If you are a Firefox user, you can start the browser in private browsing mode by following any one of the methods.

  • Type about:config in the Firefox address bar.
  • Search for the following
  • Browser.privatebrowsing.autostart

  • Now, double click it and the value will be changed to true.
  • Just restart Firefox and the browser will open in private browsing mode.

  • Right click on the Firefox shortcut.
  • Select Properties.
  • In the target field, add the “-private” [without quotes] at the end.
  • Click OK and that’s all.

It always opens Firefox in private browsing when you click on the shortcut.

If you’ve more than one Firefox shortcuts, then you need to add the command to all the shortcuts.

The Firefox have the built-in option to do this task.

  • Open Firefox.
  • Navigate to Menu > Options > Privacy.
  • Open the drop-down list besides the Firefox will: option.
  • Choose "Use custom settings for history".
  • Now, check the option “Always use private browsing mode” option.
  • Always use private browsing mode
  • The Firefox will prompt you for a restart. After a restart, it always starts Firefox in private browsing mode.

Opera

Steps

  • Right click on the shortcut of Opera.
  • Select Properties.
  • In the target field, add”-private” [without quotes].
  • Opera properties
  • Select OK.

Removing private browsing mode from browsers shortcuts

If you want to have normal browser shortcut, you can do any one of the followings:

  • Delete the shortcut [if you’ve changed the shortcut for private browsing mode] and create a new shortcut for the browser.
  • Open shortcut properties and remove the command you added at the end.
