How to Split and Merge PDF Files

In this post, we'll see how to split a PDF. Also, we'll look at the steps to merge PDFs. Let's get started.

Split a PDF using Web Browser

You can use a web browser to split PDF. Here is how you can use ChromeFirefox or Edge to do this task:

Chrome

    ​Open PDF you want to split in Chrome web browser.

    Click on "Print" icon at the top (Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + P). Now, you can see the "Print" window.

    Make sure you see "Save as PDF" beside "Destination." If not, click on the "Change" button. You can see a popup now. Select "Save as PDF" which you can find it under "Print Destinations" section.

    Beside "Pages" option, you can see two options and the option "All" is selected, by default. Select the text field option which is under beneath "All."

    Enter the page number(s) and ranges(s) you want. In this instance, I want pages 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10.

    Hit the "Save" button and save the PDF.

Firefox

    ​Open the PDF you prefer to split in Firefox.

    Hit the "Print" icon at the top or press Ctrl + P.

    Now, you can see the "Print" popup. Make sure you see "Microsoft Print to PDF" in the drop-down list beside "Name."

    In the "Print range" section, select "Pages." Now, enter the page range you want (if you want a single page alone, input the page number in both the fields). The one disadvantage here is that you can input only one page number or range.

    Click "OK" and then save the PDF.

Edge

    ​Open the PDF in Microsoft Edge.

    Click on "Print" icon at the top or press Ctrl + P.

    In the "Print" popup, make sure you see "Microsoft Print to PDF" in the drop-down list under "Printer."

    Under "Pages," you can see a drop-down list. Open it and choose "Page range." In the text field below "Range," enter the page number(s) and range(s) you want.

    Hit the "Print" button and then save the PDF.

Split a PDF using PDF Reader

You can split PDF using a PDF reader. Here, we'll see the steps to do this task using Foxit Reader and Adobe Acrobat Reader DC.

Foxit Reader

    ​Install and open Foxit Reader.

    Open the PDF that you wish to split.
  • angle-double-right
    Hit Ctrl + P, and you can see the "Print" popup.

    Make sure you see "Microsoft Print to PDF" in the drop-down list beside "Name."

    In the "Print Range" section, select "Pages." In the text field beside "Pages," enter the page number(s) and range(s) you want.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC

    ​Open the PDF you want to split in Acrobat Reader DC.

    Press Ctrl + P, and you can see "Print" popup.

    Make sure the drop-down list beside "Printer" has "Microsoft Print to PDF."

    In the "Pages to Print" section, select the option "Pages." Now, enter the page number(s) and Range(s) you want.

    Play with other options if you wish.

    ​Hit the "Print" button and then save the PDF.

Important Note about Splitting PDF on PC

The "Microsoft Print to PDF" option is only available in Windows 10.

If your device has other Windows OS, then you need to install CutePDF Writer in your PC. Select "CutePDF Writer" from the drop-down list in the "Print" popup, and except that, the rest is the same as the above steps.

Split a PDF on Android

    Install and open the PDF Utils app.

    Tap "Split" option.

    You'll be in the "Recent" screen. Tap "Hamburger" icon (three vertical lines) at the top, hit the location, and then select the PDF.

    Now, you can see a popup where you need to enter the page range. Input it as per your wish and then tap "OK."

    Provide the permission for the app.

That's it. The PDF will get split as per you set, and you'll see the output PDF(s).

Merge PDFs on PC

    ​Install and open PDF Split and Merge (PDFsam) Basic software.
  • angle-right
    ​Click the "Merge" option.​
  • angle-right
    ​Click "Add" button and then add all the PDF files you want to combine OR drag and drop all the PDF files you want to merge into the top section.

    ​Now, if you wish, you can use the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons to reorder the PDF files.

    ​If you wish, play with options in the "Merge settings" and "Destination file."

    ​Click "Run" button at the bottom.

That's all. The PDF documents that you have added will be merged into a single PDF.

Merge PDFs on Android

    Install and open the PDF Utils app.
  • angle-double-right
    Tap "Merge." Provide permissions for the app.​
  • angle-double-right
    ​Now, find and select the PDF documents you want to merge and then tap "OK." Remember that all the PDF files you wish to combine should be in the same place.

    ​In the "Reorder Files" screen, you can reorder the PDF documents. To rearrange, drag the four vertical lines beside the PDF document for which you want to change order and drop it in the position you want.

    ​Tap the "Create PDF" button.

    ​In the popup, input the file name as per your wish and then tap "OK."

That's it. The app will merge the PDF documents into a single PDF and then open it in the default PDF reader of your Android device.
