How to Set Default Sound Input and Output Devices

Follow the below steps to set default sound input and output devices in Windows 10:

Open Sound settings.

For Output Devices

Select the output device which you want to set as default from the drop-down list in the “Output” section.

For Input Devices

Select the input device, which you like to set as default from the drop-down list in the “Input” section.

Alternate Method

You can set the default sound input and output devices using the below steps:

Right-click on the “Volume” icon in the taskbar. Click “Sounds.”

For Output Devices

Navigate to the “Playback” tab. Select the device you wish.

Hit the “Set Default” button. Remember that if you hit this button, then the selected device will become the default device and default communication device.

If you like to set the selected device as any of the both, click the “Down” arrow in the button and you can see these options: “Default Device” and “Default Communication Device.” Hit the one you prefer.

For Input Devices

Navigate to the “Recording” tab. Select the device you like.

Hit the “Set Default” button. Remember that if you hit this button, then the selected device will become the default device and default communication device.

If you like to set the selected device as any of the both, click the “Down” arrow in the button and you can see these options: “Default Device” and “Default Communication Device.” Hit the one you prefer.


How to Change Name of Sound Input and Output Devices

Follow the below steps to change the name of the sound input and output devices in Windows 10:

Launch Sound settings.

For Output Devices

Select the output device for which you want to rename from the drop-down list in the “Output” section.

Hit the “Device properties” link. Give the name you wish in the field at the top and then hit the “Rename” button.

For Input Devices

Select the input device for which you like to rename from the drop-down list in the “Input” section.

Hit the “Device properties” link. Give the name you want in the field at the top and then hit the “Rename” button.
