How to Reset Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (and More)

In this post you will see the steps to reset Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge.

You will also see the steps to reboot Edge and Chrome.

In this case I use a Windows 10 PC and Android. Let’s get started.

How to reset Chrome

PC

Open the Chrome browser.

In the address bar, type chrome://settings/reset and then press the “Enter” key.

You can now see the section called “Reset and clean up.”

You will see the option “Restore settings to their original defaults” at the top of “Clean up computer.”

Press this option and you will see a pop-up.

You will see this message: This will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. It will also disable all extensions and clear temporary data like cookies. Your bookmarks, history, and saved passwords will not be cleared.

If you agree, uncheck the option “Help make Chrome better by reporting the current settings” if you don’t want to report your current settings to Chrome.

Click the Reset settings button.

That’s it.

Alternative method

If your Chrome browser has a single profile, proceed as follows:

Press Ctrl + Shift + M.

Now press the gear icon next to the “Other people.”

Move the mouse over the profile you want to reset.

Hit the three vertical dots.

Click “Remove this person.”

Click “Remove this person.”

That’s all.

Note: If your Chrome browser has multiple profiles, proceed as follows:

Close the Chrome browser completely.

Open the File Explorer.

Make the File Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

Go to C: > Users > yourusername > AppData > Local > Google > Chrome.

You will see the folder “User Data.” Take a backup of this folder. Delete it now.

Android

You can reset Chrome for Android and here’s how:

Open the Settings app.

Hit Apps & notifications.

Hit See all X apps. X is a number.

Search and tap Chrome.

Click Storage & cache > Clear storage.

Tap the Clear All Data button.

In the pop-up, tap OK.

How to reboot Edge or Chrome browser without losing tabs

PC

The usual way to restart the browser is to close the browser and then reopen it. In this way, the browser loses its tabs.

But you can restart Chrome or Edge without it losing any of its tabs, and here’s how:

In the address bar of the Google Chrome browser, type – chrome://restart and then hit the “Enter” key to restart.

In the address bar of the Microsoft Edge browser, type – edge://restart and then press the “Enter” key to restart.

Note: If you want to do this quickly, use this command to create a bookmark or favorite and make it available in the bookmarks or favorites bar.

How to reset Edge

PC

Open Edge browser.

In the address bar, type edge://settings/reset and then press the “Enter” key.

Now you will see “Restore settings to their default values.” on the right. Hit it.

You can now see a pop-up that says: This will reset your startup page, new tab page, search engine, and pinned tabs. It will also disable all extensions and clear temporary data like cookies. Your favorites, history and saved passwords will not be cleared.

If you agree, click the “Reset” button in the pop-up.

Alternative method

Create a system restore point on your Windows 10 PC.

Open the File Explorer.

Make the File Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

Go to this folder: C: > Users > yourusername > AppData > Local > Packages > Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe.

Delete all contents in this folder.

Open PowerShell as administrator.

Enter the following command and then press the Enter key:

Get AppXPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml” -Verbose}

Android device

You can reset Edge for Android and here’s how:

Open the Settings app.

Hit Apps & notifications.

Tap See all X apps. X is a number.

Find and tap Edge.

Click Storage & cache > Clear storage.

Tap the Clear all data button.

Tap OK in the pop-up.
