How to Rename Files and Folders in Android and Windows 10

Renaming files and folders is a simple task. Let's see how to do it in Android and Windows 10.

Rename a File or Folder in Android

The below are the steps for renaming a file or folder (In this instance, I am renaming the file):

  • angle-double-right
Open the default file manager (the one that comes with the device).
  • angle-double-right
Go to the location where you have the file you want to rename.
  • angle-double-right
Select the file by long pressing it.
  • angle-double-right
Tap Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) at the top and then tap "Rename."

Rename Multiple Files and Folders at Once in Android

Typically, the default file manager does not have the option to rename in batch.

If you want to rename multiple files (OR multiple folders OR file(s) and folder(s)) at once on your Android device, then here are the steps (In this instance, I'm renaming multiple files at once):

  • angle-right
Install and open ES File Explorer File Manager app.
  • angle-right
Go to the location where you have the files you want to rename.
  • angle-right
Select all the files you want to rename (To select: long press the one you want to rename and then tap the remaining ones).
  • angle-right
Tap "Rename" at the bottom which is beside "Delete."
  • angle-right
Now, you can see "Batch Rename" popup, where you can see these options:

Option 1:

You can input a new name and start number. For instance, if you put the new name as the pic and leave the "Start number" intact, then your files will be renamed as pic1, pic2 and so on.

You can use the "Start number" if you wish to customize the starting number. Let's say; you set the new name as the pic and Start number like 2, then your files will be renamed as pic2, pic3 and so on. I hope you got the point.

Option 2:

You can input the new name which will be added as the prefix to the original file name. For instance, if you put the new name as the picture and your files name are pic1 and pic2. Your files will be renamed as picturepic1 and picturepic2.

Note: keep in mind that you can use Option 1 OR Option 2 at a time.

Option 3:

The third option is "Rename extension name." This option is used to change the file extension. If you do not want to change the file extension, then leave this option intact.

  • angle-right
Use the Option 1 OR Option 2 as per your liking. In this instance, I am selecting Option 1 and provided the new name as "image." I leave the "Start number" and "Rename extension name" intact.
  • angle-right
    Tap "OK."

Note:

Here is the only difference you can see when using the above steps for the folder.

Let's say - Hello is the new name you have entered. The folder in which you have typed this new name will be renamed to Hello, and the rest of the folders will be renamed to Hello (2) and so on.
