How to Change What to Happen When You Press Power Button on Laptop

The laptop running Windows will go to "Sleep" mode when you press the "Power" button.

If you want to change what to happen when you press the Power button, then this guide is for you.

Change What to Happen When You Press Power Button on Laptop

In this instance, I am using the laptop running Windows 10. Let's see the steps.

    Open Run Command. Type "powercfg.cpl" (without double quotes) and then press "Enter."

    In the left side of the screen, you can see "Choose what the power buttons do" link. Click on it.

    Now, you can see "When I press the power button" along with its two drop-down lists.
Default option Sleep is shown on both drop-down lists

    ​Open drop-down list under "On battery" column. Now, you can see these options - Do nothing, Sleep (the default option), Hibernate, Shut down and Turn off the display.

    Pick the option you want.

    Now, open the drop-down list under "Plugged in" column. Choose the option you want from that drop-down list.

    In this instance, I have chosen "Shut down" from both the drop-down lists.

    ​Click on "Save changes" button at the bottom.

​That is all. From now on, when you press the Power button, the action you chose will be initiated. As per our above instance, my laptop will get shut down when I press the Power button.
