How to Pin to Taskbar or Start Menu in Windows 10

How to Pin to Taskbar in Windows 10

If the shortcut you want to pin is on the Start menu – Right-click on it. Hover your mouse over “More.” Click on the “Pin to taskbar” option.

If the program or its shortcut is on the File Explorer – Right-click on it. Hit “Pin to taskbar.”

Alternate way – Select the shortcut. Click on “Application Tools” in the Ribbon. Hit “Pin to taskbar.”

If the program or its shortcut is on the desktop – drag it and drop on the taskbar.

Alternate way – Right-click on it. Hit “Pin to taskbar.”

If the program is running, then you can see its icon in the taskbar. To pin, right-click on it. Click “Pin to taskbar.”

“Pin to taskbar” option is available for some file formats (for instance: EXE). But not for all (example: PNG).

Here, you can try these steps:

Drag the file and drop it on the empty area of the taskbar. The program’s (the program that will open that file) shortcut will get added there (if it isn’t there already).

And you see that the file gets pinned to that shortcut’s “Pinned” section.

“Pin to taskbar” isn’t available for the folder. But you can try this step: Drag and drop the folder to the empty area of the taskbar.

You can see the folder pinned to the “Pinned” section in the taskbar’s “File Explorer” shortcut.

OR

You can see the “File Explorer” shortcut added to the taskbar if it isn’t already there. Also, you see the folder in the “Pinned” section of the shortcut.

If you want to pin the file or folder on the taskbar directly, follow the below steps:

Right-click on the file or folder that you want to pin.

Hit “Create shortcut.” You can see the shortcut.

Right-click on the shortcut and then hit “Properties.”

In the “Target” field, type explorer at the beginning and then hit the “Space bar” key. Hit the “OK” button.

Right-click on the shortcut. Hit “Pin to taskbar.”

That’s it.

If you wish, remove the shortcut. And even after that, the shortcut in the taskbar will work with no issue.

To Unpin from Taskbar

Right-click on the one you want to unpin. Hit “Unpin from taskbar.”

You can pin programs, shortcuts, individual sections of the Settings app, Control Panel items (not all of them), and folders to the Windows 10 Start menu.

Here’s how:

Go to the place where the one you want to pin exists. It can be Start Menu, Settings app, Control Panel (make sure that the view is “Large icons” or “Small icons”), File Explorer, or desktop.

Right-click on the one you want to pin.

Click the “Pin to Start” option.

If you see a confirmation pop-up, hit “Yes” in it.

That’s all. You see that the item is pinned to the Start menu as tile.

The above steps work for some file formats (For instance: EXE). But not for all. For example, the above steps won’t work for PNG.

Here, you can try the below steps.

Right-click on the file you want to pin.

Hit the “Create shortcut” option. You see that file shortcut.

Right-click on that shortcut. Hit “Properties.”

If you want to unpin from the Start menu, follow these steps:

Right-click on the tile you want.

Click on the “Unpin from Start” option.
