A Guide on Preview, Details, and Navigation Pane in Windows 10

What is Preview Pane

Preview pane, a pane on the right side of the File Explorer, shows the content of the file you’ve selected. Keep in mind that this is not the case for some file types such as .exe.

By default, you can’t see it in File Explorer. But look at the below section where you can find the steps to show or hide it.

Remember that the steps to hide and show are the same.

Also, keep in mind that if you show preview pane, then:

  • It’ll replace Details pane if already enabled.
  • It’ll be applied to every folder.

Steps

  1. Open the File Explorer.
  2. Press Alt and P keys simultaneously.

Alternate Method

  1. Launch the File Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the View tab in the Ribbon.
  3. You can see Preview pane which you can find beside Navigation pane. Hit it.

Show or Hide Preview Handlers

By default, preview handlers is shown in the preview pane, and it displays the text type files content in the preview pane.

Follow the below steps to hide preview handlers:

  1. Open File Explorer Options.
  2. Navigate to the View tab.
  3. Unselect Show preview handlers in preview pane option, which you can find between Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items and Show status bar.

  1. Hit the Ok button at the bottom.

Note: To show preview handlers, follow the above steps, and instead of unselecting, select.

What is Details Pane

Details pane, a pane on the right side of the File Explorer, shows the information about the file or folder you’ve selected. The information may vary depending on the item you’ve selected.

By default, you can’t see it in File Explorer. But look at the below section where you can find the steps to show or hide it.
