How to Mute a Tab in Chrome, Firefox and Edge

You can mute a site (and tab) in Chrome and tab only in Firefox, and Edge web browsers.

It is a simple task. In this post, we will see the steps to do this task. Let's get started.

How to Mute a Tab in Chrome, Firefox and Edge

Mute Site in Chrome

  • angle-right
    Open the site you want mute.
  • angle-right
    Right-click on the tab in which site is opened.
  • angle-right
    Click on "Mute site" option.

That is all. The site is muted and will remain same until you unmute it.

Keep in mind that the muted site will remain muted even on incognito mode.

Here's how you can unmute it:

  • angle-double-right
    Open the site you have muted.
  • angle-double-right
    Now, right-click on that tab and then select "Unmute site" option.

Note: As you see, the Chrome can mute a site. However, the Firefox and Edge cannot. They can only mute tab.

Mute All Sites At Once in Chrome

You can mute all sites at once in Chrome and here are the steps:

  • angle-right
    Type the following in the Address Bar - chrome://settings/content/sound
  • angle-right
    Now, press "Enter."
  • angle-right
    Click on the toggle beside "Allow sites to play sound (recommended)."

That is all. All the websites you have opened (and will open) in Chrome will be muted.

Note: Remember that you can also exclude and include websites you want to mute from here.

To unmute a site, follow this step - Right-click on a tab in which the site that you want to unmute is opened and then select "Unmute site" option.

Mute Tab in Chrome

The Chrome does not have the inbuilt option to mute a tab. However, if you prefer, follow the below steps to get it:

    Type the following in Address Bar - chrome://flags#enable-tab-audio-muting
  • angle-double-right
    Now, press "Enter." You can see the flag "Tab audio muting UI control."
  • angle-double-right
    Open the drop-down beside it and choose "Enabled."

    Now, you can see the notification at the bottom. Click on "Relaunch Now" button in the notification to relaunch browser to apply changes.

From now on, click on "Volume" icon at the top to mute a tab. To unmute it, press the "Mute" icon at the top of the tab.

Remember that the flags are the experimental feature. In a nutshell, this feature may disappear at any time.

Mute Tab in Firefox

    Right-click on the tab you want to mute.

    Select "Mute Tab" option (which is above "Pin Tab" option).

That's it. The tab is muted.

Here are the steps to unmute:

  • angle-double-right
    Right-click on the tab you want to unmute.
  • angle-double-right
    Select "Unmute Tab" option.

Alternatively, you can mute by clicking on the "Volume" icon and unmute by clicking on the "Mute" icon.

Press Ctrl + M to mute a tab. Press the same keys to unmute it.

Mute Tab in Edge

  • angle-right
    Right-click on the tab that you want to mute.

    Now, you can see "Mute tab" option. Keep in mind that this option only works when the tab plays audio. Click on "Mute tab" option.

Alternatively, you can mute by pressing "Volume" icon at the top of the tab and unmute by pressing "Mute" icon.

You can unmute at any time you want. If you wish to unmute, then here are the steps:

  • angle-double-right
    Right-click on the tab you have muted.
  • angle-double-right
    Click on "Unmute tab" option.
