How to Turn Off Microphone in Windows 10

How to turn off the microphone in Windows 10

You can do it using one of the following methods. Let us see what those ways are.

Method #1

Start the Device Manager.

Expand “Audio inputs and outputs.”

There you can find the entry “Microphone.”

Right-click on it and then press the “Disable device” option.

Click “Yes” in the confirmation popup.

Note: To activate it, follow the steps above and then press the “Enable device” option.

Method #2

Press the Windows + I shortcut, and you will find the Settings app and click System > Sound.

Alternatively, you can open the sound settings directly.

In the “Input” section, click the “Device properties” link.

Next to “Disable” you will see a checkbox. Select it.

Note: To turn it on, follow the steps above, but unselect it instead of selecting it.

Alternatively, you can do the following to disable the microphone:

Open the Sound settings.

In the “Input” section, click the “Manage sound devices” link.

Click on “Microphone.”

Click the “Disable” button.

Note: To activate it, follow the steps above and then press the “Enable” button.

Method #3

Right-click on the “Volume” icon in the taskbar system tray and press the “Sounds” option.

Navigate to the Recording tab in the Sound pop-up window.

Now you see “Microphone.”

Right-click on it and then press the “Disable” option.

Note: To activate it, follow the steps above and then press the “Enable” option.

Alternatively, you can follow these steps:

Go to the Recording tab using the steps above.

Select “Microphone” and then click “Properties.”

You will now see a drop-down list next to “Device usage.”

Open it and select “Don’t use this device (disable).” Press the OK button.

Note: To turn it on, follow the steps above, but select “Use this device (enable).”

Method #4

Open the Settings app.

Hit Privacy.

On the left sidebar, click “Microphone” between “Camera” and “Voice activation.”

In the section “Allow access to the Microphone on this device” you will see the Change button. Press it.

Switch off the toggle switch.

That’s it.

Note: If you want to activate, activate the toggle switch.

Method #5

Open Registry Editor. Take a backup of the Registry before proceeding.

Expand the following keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > MMDevices > Audio > Capture.

Now expand the first subkey of the “Capture” key.

Click on the “Properties” sub key.

Go through the Data column in the right pane and find out if it belongs to your microphone.

Now perform the above two steps for the remaining subkeys of the Capture key until you find the one that belongs to your microphone.

Once you have found it, press the key of the Properties subkey you are now in.

Now you see DeviceState. Double-click on it.

Enter 10000001 in the “Value data” field and then click OK.

That’s all.

Note: To activate, you must specify 1.

How to allow or disallow microphone access in Windows 10

Open the Settings app.

Hit Privacy > Microphone.

In the section “Allow apps to access your microphone” you will see a toggle switch.

Activate it if you want apps to access the microphone. If you want to block microphone access for all apps at once, deactivate it.

In the section “Choose which Microsoft Store apps can access your microphone” you can allow or block microphone access for individual Microsoft Store apps.

In the section “Allow desktop apps to access your microphone” you will see a toggle switch.

If you want desktop apps to have access to the microphone, enable it. Otherwise, disable it.
