How to Hide App List in Start Menu (Windows 10)

In this post, you will see:

Let’s get started.

Hide App List in Start menu

Windows 10’s Start menu by default has an app list that includes shortcuts and folders filled with shortcuts.

If you no longer want the app list in the Start menu, then you can hide it.

You can complete this task in three different ways. Choose the one you want.

Method #1

Press Windows + I and you can see the Settings app.

Hit Personalization.

Click Start on the left sidebar.

Disable Show app list in Start menu.

That’s all.

To activate the app list, activate the above.

Method #2

Type gpedit.msc in the Run command box and then press Enter.

Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

In the right pane, you will see “Remove All Programs list from the Start menu.” Double-click on it.

Select Enabled.

You will now see a drop-down list with these options:

  • None – this is selected by default and disables the app list.
  • Collapse – this disables the app list and shows the “All apps” button. If you click on this button, you can see the app list.
  • Collapse and disable setting – this does the same thing as Collapse. It also makes the “Show app list in Start menu” option unavailable.
  • Remove and disable setting – this disables the app list and makes the “Show app list in Start menu” option unavailable.

Click OK.

That’s all.

Note: If you want to view the app list in the Start menu, follow the steps above, but choose Not Configured or Disabled.

Method #3

Open the Registry Editor. I suggest that you back up the Registry before proceeding.

Expand the following keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies.

Press the Explorer key. You need to create it if you don’t see it, and here’s how:

Right-click on the Policies key, then select New > Key, enter the name as Explorer, and then press Enter.

Right-click on the space in the right pane.

Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Enter the name as NoStartMenuMorePrograms and then press Enter.

Double-click on it.

Type 1 in the Value data field and then press the OK button.

Restart File Explorer or PC.

That’s all.

To view the app list, delete the NoStartMenuMorePrograms DWORD or replace 1 with 0.

Hide Recently Added Section

The “Recently added” section of the Start menu shows the most recently installed programs.

If you do not want this section in the Start menu, then you can hide it.

You can do this task in three ways. Pick the one you like.

Method #1

Press Windows + I to open Settings.

Hit Personalization.

Click on Start in the left sidebar.

Turn off “Show recently added apps.”

That’s all.

Note that you can turn it on and all you need to do is turn on “Show recently added apps.”

Method #2

Type gpedit.msc in the Run box and then hit the Enter key.

If you want to hide the Recently added section for all users, then navigate to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

If you want to hide the Recently added section for the current user, then navigate to:

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

Here I am doing this for all users, but the steps are the same for the current user.

Double-click on the “Remove “Recently added” list from Start Menu.”

Select Enabled and click OK.

Restart the computer.

That’s all.

Note: You can view the Recently added section by following the steps above and selecting Not Configured and Disabled.

Method #3

Open the Registry Editor. I suggest that you back up the Registry before proceeding.

If you want to hide for all users, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows > Explorer.

If you want to hide for the current user, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows > Explorer.

Here I’m doing this for the current user, but the steps are the same for all users.

Right-click on the blank space in the right pane.

Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Provide the name as HideRecentlyAddedApps and then hit the Enter key.

Double-click this and provide 1 in the Value data field.

Hit the OK button.

Restart your PC or File Explorer.

That’s all.

Note that you can revert and all you need to do is delete the DWORD you’ve created above or change the value from 1 to 0.

If you want to hide a particular item in the “Recently added” section, then follow these steps:

Right-click on the item you want to hide in the Recently added section.

That’s all.

You can clear the “Recently added” section and here’s how:

Right-click on an item in that section.

Hover the mouse over “More.”

Hit the Clear list option.

That’s it.

Double-click on “Remove frequent programs list from the Start Menu.”

Select Enabled and click OK.

Restart the computer.

That’s all.

Right-click on the item you want to hide in the Most used section.

Hover the mouse over “More.”

Now, click on “Don’t show in this list.”

That’s all.

Stop Windows 10 from Tracking Your Most Used Apps

Open the Settings app. Hit Privacy.

Now you can see “Let Windows track app launches to improve Start and search results.” Disable it.

That’s all. From now on, no more tracking and you can also see that the “Show most used apps” is grayed out.
