How to Add Header and Footer in Google Docs (and More)

In this post, we’ll see the steps to add and remove header and footer in Google Docs.

Add and Remove Header in Google Docs

Go to Google Docs. Sign in if not already.

​Open the document you wish. Make sure you’re in the first page of the document.

​Click on “Insert” at the top. Hover your mouse over “Header & page number,” and then you can see the “Header” option. Click on it.

​Now, enter the text you want in the header.

​You can also see “Different first page header/footer” option. If you want the same header and footer for all the pages, leave this option intact. If you want a different header and footer for the first page and the remaining pages, select this option.

​If you’ve selected the “Different first page header/footer” option, then the text you’ve entered will be removed from the header of the first page alone, and the text will be there in the header of the remaining pages. Now, you need to enter the text you prefer in the header of the first page, and it will not affect the header of the remaining pages.

Click on the body of the document.

That’s all. The header is added successfully.

To delete header completely from a Google Docs document, follow the below steps:

​Click on the header on the first page.

​Uncheck the “Different first page header/footer” option if it is selected.

​Press Ctrl + A and then hit “Backspace” key in your keyboard.

​Now, hit the body of the document.

That’s it. The header is removed successfully.

​Open Google Docs app.

​Open the document you wish and then hit the “Pencil” icon at the bottom.

​Hit the Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) at the top and then tap on “Print layout.”

​Now, tap on the top of the page and then enter the text you want.

​Hit the body of the document.

That’s it. The header is added successfully.

If you want to remove the header entirely from the document, then here are the steps:

Enable “Print layout” option if not already.

​Tap on the header.

​Select the text now and then hit the “Backspace” key in your keyboard.

​Hit the body of the document.

That’s all. The header is removed successfully.

​Sign into Google Docs and then open the document you wish. Make sure you’re in the first page of the document.

​Click on “Insert” at the top and then hover your mouse over “Header & page number.” You can see the “Footer” option. Click on it.

​Sign into Google Docs.

​Open the document for which you want to add the page numbers.

​Click on “Insert” at the top. Hover your mouse over “Header & page number.” Now, hover your mouse over “page number.”

​Click on the format you prefer.

If you want to remove page numbers from the document, then follow these steps – Click on a page number, clear that page number and then click on the body of the document.

Note: When you add or remove the page(s) in the document, the page numbers will be automatically changed accordingly.

​Open Google Docs app.

​Open the document for which you want to add page numbers and then tap on “Pencil” icon at the bottom.

​Hit the “+” icon at the top.

​Under “Insert,” you can see “Page number.” Tap on it, and you can see four formats. Choose the one you prefer.

If you want to remove page numbers, then follow these steps – Tap on a page number, clear that page number and then tap on the body of the document.

Note: When you add or remove the page(s) in the document, the page numbers will be automatically changed accordingly.
