How to Add a Link in Google Docs

Adding a hyperlink (also referred to as “link”) into a Google Docs document is a simple task and here’s how you can do that on PC, Android, and iPhone:

PC

Steps

  1. Go to Google Docs. Sign in, if not already.

  2. Open the document and then select the text. Keep in mind that the text you’ve selected is the anchor text.

  3. ​Hit the “Insert link” icon at the top which you can find between “Highlight color” and “Add comment.”

  4. Now, change the text if you wish and then enter the URL in the “Link” field.

  5. Hit the “Apply” button.

That’s all. The link is added successfully.

If you want to copy, edit or delete a link, click on it. Now, you can see three icons. The first one is to copy the link, and the second one is to change the anchor text and URL of the link. The final one is to remove the hyperlink. Pick the one you want.

Android

​Open the Google Docs app.

​Open the document and then hit the “Pencil” icon at the bottom.

​Select the text. Remember that the text you’ve selected is the anchor text.

​Hit the “+” icon at the top, and then you can see the “Link” option under “Insert.” Tap on the “Link” option.

​In the “Insert link” screen, change the text if you wish and then enter the URL in the “Link” field.

​Hit the “Tick” icon at the top.

That’s it. The link is added successfully.

If you want to edit or remove a link, then tap on it twice. Hit the “Edit link” option to change the text and URL of the link. If you want to remove the link, then tap on the “Remove link.”

iPhone

Open the Google Docs app.

Open the document you wish and then tap the “Pencil” icon.

Select the text and keep in mind that the text you’ve selected is the anchor text.

Tap “Insert Link.”

In the “Insert link” screen, you can change the text if you wish and provide the URL in the “Link” field.

That’s all. The link is added successfully.

If you want to edit or remove a link, long-press it. Hit “Edit Link” to edit the link. Tap “Remove Link” to remove the link.

Note: If you want to link to another Google Docs document, then type the document name in the “Link” field, and you’ll be shown that document. Click (or tap) on it to add it to the “Link” field. This one applies to the Google Docs web version and app (Android and iPhone) too.
