How to Open Gmail Email in a New Window

In Gmail, a click on an email will open it in the same tab by default. To open an email in a new tab, press the “Ctrl” key, and hit the email.

To open an email from the entire conversation in a new tab, follow the below steps:

Open the email. Hit the three vertical dots at the top of the email, which you want to open in a new tab.

Now, hit the “Print” option. Close the “Print” pop-up by pressing the “Escape” key. Now, you can see the email in a new tab.

Alternatively, you can do the above task using these steps: Turn off the conversation view, and then hit the email while pressing the “Ctrl” key.

To open an email in a new window, press the “Shift” key, and hit the email.

Here’s an alternative way to the above one:

Open the email by hitting it. Besides the “Print” icon, you can see the “New window” icon. Hit it, and the email will open in a new window.

To open an email from the entire conversation in a new window, you need to disable the conversation view in your Gmail account first.

After that, you can open the email in a new window using any of the two ways mentioned above.


How to Enable or Disable Plain Text Mode in Gmail

You need to enable plain text mode to use it since rich text mode is the default in Gmail.

Remember, enabling plain text mode will disable rich text mode. Let’s see the steps to enable.

Sign into your Gmail account. Click on the “Compose” button at the top left.

In the “New Message” pop-up, hit the three vertical dots which you can find beside the “Trash can” icon at the bottom.

In the menu, hit the “Plain text mode” option, which you can find between “Label” and “Print.”

You can see a checkmark beside the option now, which means it’s enabled.

Notes:

  • Remember, you can enable or disable plain text mode while replying and forwarding too.
  • Disabling plain text mode will enable rich text mode, and the above steps can do it too.

How to Check Storage Usage of Gmail

If you want to check how much of your Google account storage quota is used by Gmail, then follow any of the below ways.

Method #1

Click this link (sign in if not already), and you can find storage usage of Gmail beside “Gmail.”

Method #2

Open Google Drive for Android or Google Drive for iPhone.

Hit the three vertical lines at the top > Storage. If you’re on iPhone, hit “View details.”

Beside “Gmail,” you can see the storage quota used by Gmail.


How to Change Inbox Type in Gmail

Note: The change will be applied to your account. In other words, if you change inbox type in Gmail for Android, it’ll reflect in the Gmail web version and vice versa.

PC

Sign into your Gmail account. Hit the “Gear” icon at the top. Scroll down until you see “Inbox Type” section.

Now, you can see six inbox types. They are:

Default – This is the default one. Hit the “Customize” option beneath the “Default” to customize the latter.

Important first – This one will divide the inbox into two sections.

One is “Important” which contains the emails that Gmail decides as important using various signals, and the rest will be in “Everything else.”

Unread first – This one will divide the inbox into two sections.

At the top, you can see “Unread” which includes all the unread emails, and the “Everything else” contains the rest.

Starred first – This one will divide the inbox into two sections.

At the top, you can see “Starred” which contains all starred emails and the “Everything else” contains the rest.

Priority Inbox – This one will divide the inbox into three sections.

At the top, you can see “Important and unread” and as the name shows it shows the important and unread emails. Next, you can see “Starred” which has all starred emails and then “Everything else” which contains the rest of the emails.

Hit the “Customize” option beneath the “Priority Inbox” to customize the latter.

Multiple Inboxes – Hit the “Customize” option beneath the “Multiple Inboxes” to customize the latter.

Pick any of the above one you prefer.

Note: To revert, follow the above steps, but pick “Default.”

Android or iPhone

Open the Gmail app. Hit the three vertical lines at the top > Settings.

Hit the Gmail account you prefer.

Now, hit the “Inbox type.” Select the one you prefer.

  • To revert, follow the above steps, but pick “Default Inbox.”

How to Change Theme in Gmail

You can change the theme in the Gmail web version (PC), and here’s how:

Sign into your Gmail account. Click on the “Gear” icon. Hit “View all” in the “Theme” section.

In the “Pick your theme” pop-up, you can see the themes now. Select the theme you prefer by clicking on it.

Notes: If you’re not happy with the themes in the “Pick your theme” pop-up or want to see more themes, then follow the below steps:

You can notice the “More Images” option within the “Pick your theme” pop-up. Click on it, and you’ll be taken to the “Featured” section of “Select your background image” pop-up, where you can see a lot of themes.

Select the one you prefer by clicking on it and then hit the “Select” button. After that, follow the below steps.

Now, you can view that the theme you’ve selected got applied to your account.

Also, you see these three options at the bottom of the pop-up which you can use to customize the theme’s appearance:

  • Text Background – This one changes the text background. Click on this option, and you can view two options: Light and Dark. Pick the one you prefer.
  • Vignette – This one makes corners darker.
  • Blur – This one blur background image.

Note: The above three options are optional, and it’ll not appear for all the themes.

If you are happy with the selected theme, click on the “Save” button. That’s all.

To Set Your Picture as Theme

Note: The image you want to set as the theme need to be in any of the “Album” of “Google Photos.”

​Open “Pick your theme” pop-up using the above steps. ​In the pop-up, click on the “My photos” option.

​In the “Select your background image” pop-up, beneath the “My photos” tab, you can see albums. Hit the one which has the photo you want to set as the theme.

Select the image you prefer and then hit the “Select” button.

Now, you can see that the picture got applied to your account. Also, you view three options that you can utilize for customization.

Hit the “Save” button.


How to Enable, Create, and Delete Templates in Gmail?

“Templates” (previously referred to as the “Canned Responses”) feature in Gmail lets you create a message as a template. You can use it later in your new email, forward, or reply.

How to Enable Templates in Gmail?

By default, this feature is enabled in Gmail, but here’s how you make sure it is:

Go to your Gmail account. Click on the “Gear” icon at the top right.

Hit “See all settings” button.

Navigate to the “Advanced” tab.

You see “Templates.” Make sure “Enable” is selected beside “Templates.”

If that’s the case, move to the next section. If not, select “Enable,” and hit the “Save Changes” button at the bottom.

Note: To disable “Templates” – Select “Disable” beside “Templates.” Hit “Save Changes” button.

How to Create a Template in Gmail?

Click on the “Compose” button at the top left.

In the “New Message” pop-up, compose the message which you want to save as a template.

Hit the three vertical dots which is beside “Trash can” icon at the bottom.

On the menu, hover your mouse over “Templates.”

Hover your mouse over the “Save draft as template” option.

Hit the “Save as new template” option.

In the pop-up, provide a name for the template and then hit the “Save” button.

Notes

  • Discard the draft if you wish.
  • Remember, the name of the template is the “Subject” of the email while you use it.

How to Insert a Template?

While composing a new email, reply or forward, hit the three vertical dots at the bottom.

On the menu, hover your mouse over the “Templates” option.

In the “Insert Template” section, you see the templates. Hit the one you want to insert.

How to Edit a Template?

Insert the template, as we see in the above section.

Change it as per your liking. Remember that the changes to the subject line will not be overwritten.

Once done, hit the three vertical dots at the bottom.

On the menu, hover your mouse over the “Templates” option.

Hover your mouse over “Save draft as template” option.

In the “Overwrite Template” section, hit the template name which you’ve edited.

In the pop-up, hit the “Save” button.

Note: Discard the draft if you wish.

How to Delete a Template in Gmail?

Hit the “Compose” button on the left top.

In the “New Message” pop-up, hit three vertical dots at the bottom.

Hover your mouse over the Templates > Delete template.

You see the templates in the “Delete Template” section. Hit the one you prefer to delete.
