How to Change Inbox Type in Gmail

In this post, we’ll see the steps to change inbox type in Gmail (web version (PC) and app (Android)). Let’s get started.

Note: The changes will be applied to your account. In other words, if you change inbox type in Gmail for Android, it’ll reflect in Gmail web version and vice versa.

Change Inbox Type in Gmail

Go to Gmail, Sign into your account.

You can see "Inbox" on the left side menu. Hover your mouse over it, and you can see an "Inverted triangle." Hit it.

Now, you can see five inbox styles. They are:

  • Save

Default - This is the default one.

Important first - This one will divide inbox into two sections. One is “Important” which contains the emails that Gmail decides as important using various signals and the rest will be in “Everything else.”

Unread first - This one will divide inbox into two sections. At the top, you can see “Unread” which includes all the unread emails and the “Everything else” contains the rest.

Starred first - This one will divide inbox into two sections. At the top, you can see “Starred” which contains all starred emails and the “Everything else” contains the rest.

Priority Inbox - This one will divide inbox into three sections. At the top, you can see “Important and unread” and as the name indicates it shows the important and unread emails. Next, you can see “Starred” which has all starred emails and then “Everything else” which contains the rest of the emails.

Pick the one you prefer.

That’s it. All done.

To revert, follow the above steps, but make sure to pick “Default.”

Change Inbox Type in Gmail for Android

    Open Gmail app.

    Hit the Hamburger icon (three vertical lines) at the top.

    Tap "Settings."
  • angle-right
    Hit the Gmail account you prefer.
  • angle-right
    Now, you can see "Inbox type." Hit it.

    Select the one you prefer.

To revert, follow the above steps, but make sure to pick “Default Inbox.”
