How to Download from Google Docs and Google Drive

In this post, we'll see the steps to download a file from Google Docs.

Also, we'll look at the steps to download the file(s) and/or folder(s) from Google Drive. Let's get started.

Download a File from Google Docs

    ​Go to Google Docs. Sign in if not already.

    ​Open the document which you want to download.
  • angle-right
    ​Hit "File" at the top. Now, hover your mouse over the "Download as" option, and you can see these file formats - Microsoft Word (.docx), OpenDocument Format (.odt), Rich Text Format (.rtf), PDF Document (.pdf), Plain Text (.txt), Web Page (.html, zipped), and EPUB Publication (.epub).

    ​Choose the file format you prefer.

That's it. Now, you can see the downloaded file on your computer.

Download a File from Google Docs for Android

    ​Open Google Docs app.
  • angle-double-right
    ​Hit the Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) in the file you want to download.

    ​Now, you can see the "Download" option. Tap on it.

That's all. The file is downloaded to your Android device as a PDF file.

Follow the below steps, if you want to download the file in other formats other than PDF:

    ​Open the document and then hit the Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) at the top.

    ​Hit "Share & export" option. Now, tap on the "Save As" option.

    ​In the "Save As" popup, choose the format you want. In this instance, I've chosen "Plain Text (.txt)." Tap "OK."

That's it. Now, you can see the document opened in the format you prefer.

Hit the "Download" icon at the top.

That's all. The file is downloaded to your Android device.

Keep in mind that the same file (in our instance: text document) is also stored in Google Drive. Go to Google Drive and remove that file if you wish.

Download File(s) and/or Folder(s) from Google Drive

    Go to Google Drive.

    If you want to download an item, then you need to select the item first. Moreover, you can select an item by clicking it.

    If you want to download multiple items, then you need to select the items first. To select multiple items - click on an item you want to download. Now, press "Ctrl" key and then click on all the remaining items you wish to download.

    If you want to download all the files and folders on Google Drive, then you need to select all items first. To select all items - press Ctrl + A.

    Now, right-click on the selected item, and you can see many options. Click on "Download" option.

That's all. The item(s) will get downloaded.

Download File(s) and/or Folder(s) from Google Drive for Android

Here is an important thing to note: You can't download folder(s) using the Google Drive app. However, you can download the file(s).

Let's see the steps to download.

    ​Open the Google Drive app.

    If you want to download a file, then you need to select the file first. Moreover, you can select the file by long pressing it.

    If you want to download multiple files, then you need to select the files first. To select files - long press a file you want to download. Now, tap all the remaining files you wish to download.

    If you want to download all files under "Files" section, then you need to select those first. To do that: tap Overflow Menu (three vertical dots) at the top and then hit "Select all." Now, unselect all the folders.

    Now, hit the "Download" icon.

That's it. The file(s) will get downloaded.
