In this post, you’ll see:
I’m using Windows 11 here. Let’s start.
How to Disable Lock Screen
In Windows 11, you can disable the lock screen in two ways. Let’s check out what they are.
Launch local group policy editor. Navigate to the Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.
Then double-click “Do not display the lock screen” in the right pane. Select Enabled and click the OK button.
Note: To enable it, follow the steps above, but select Not Configured or Disabled.
Open the Registry Editor. I suggest you create a backup of your Registry before moving forward.
Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft.
Right-click on Windows. Select New > Key. Press the “Enter” key after entering the name as Personalization.
Then right-click on the space in the right pane and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.
Press the “Enter” key after you enter NoLockScreen as the name. Double-click on it and enter 1 in the “Value data” field. Click the “OK” button.
Note: To enable the lock screen, remove the Dword you created earlier or replace the 1 with 0.
How to Lock Your Windows 11 PC
Here you’ll find a variety of ways on how to lock your Windows 11 computer. You’ll also see how to create a shortcut for it. Let’s start with the former.
Press Windows + L simultaneously.
The Windows security screen appears when you press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. Hit Lock in there.
Open the Start menu and then hit the Account icon at the bottom. Click on Lock.
You can set your PC to automatically lock after a specified period of inactivity by using the “Screen Saver Settings.” Please click the link and see the bottom of that post.
Open Command Prompt. Type in the following command and then hit the Enter key: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
You can also use the above command in the following programs:
- Run Command
- The address bar of File Explorer
- Task Manager (Click File > Run new task to use the command)
- Windows PowerShell
How to Create a Shortcut to Lock Your PC
You can create a shortcut on your desktop or File Explorer to lock the Windows 11 PC.
Right-click on a blank area of the desktop or File Explorer.
Select New > Shortcut. Type rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation, and then hit the Next button.
If you don’t like the suggested shortcut name, provide the name you prefer. Click the Finish button.
How to Remove the Lock Option
If you click on your username in the Start menu, you’ll notice the “Lock” option. If you don’t want this option, you can remove it.
You can do this task in three ways. Pick the one you like.
Open the Run command. Type “powercfg.cpl” (without double quotes) and then press the Enter key.
Select the “Choose what the power buttons do” link on the left sidebar. You can find the link above “Choose what closing the lid does.”
Please click “Change settings that are currently unavailable.” Uncheck the Lock option. You can find this one beneath Hibernate.
Click the “Save changes” button at the bottom.
Note: You can add this option by following the steps above and selecting the Lock option.
Type “gpedit.msc” (without double quotes) in the “Run Box” and then press the Enter key.
Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer.
Double-click on “Show lock in the user tile menu” on the right. Select Disabled and click OK.
Note: You can add this option by following the steps above and selecting Enabled or Not Configured.
Open the Registry Editor. I suggest you back up the Registry before proceeding.
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion.
Right-click on the Explorer key. Select New > Key. Provide the name as FlyoutMenuSettings and then press the Enter key.
On the right, right-click on the blank space. Select New > Dword (32-bit) Value. Provide the name as “ShowLockOption” and then press the Enter key.
That’s all. You don’t need to do anything since the 0 is in the Value data field. And note that the lock option is no more there.
Note: You can add the lock option, and all you need to do is change the value from 0 to 1 in the Value data field. Or delete the Dword you’ve created above.
