How to Disable Comments on WordPress

WordPress, by default, have comments enabled on posts and disabled on pages.

In this post, we will see the steps to disable comments on specific post(s) and the steps to disable comments entirely. Let's get started.

How to Disable Comments on Specific Posts

You can use the below steps to disable comments on specific posts and pages (if comments already enabled on pages).

Single Post

    Go to the "Posts." Find the post for which you want to disable comments.

    Click "Quick Edit" link beneath that specific post.

    Uncheck "Allow Comments" option.

    Click on the "Update" button, and that is all.

Alternative Way

    Open the post that you want to disable comments.
  • angle-right
    Click "Screen Options" at the top and then select "Discussion."

    Click "Screen Options" again.

    Now, you can see a new Meta Box called "Discussion."
  • angle-right
    Uncheck "Allow comments" checkbox and then click on "Update" button.

For Multiple Posts at Once

    Go to "Posts" and then select posts for which you want to disable comments.

    Now, open the drop-down list at the top and choose "Edit."

    Click on "Apply" button.

    Open the drop-down list beside "Comments." Choose "Do not allow."

    Click on "Update" button now, and that is all.

How to Disable Comments Entirely on WordPress

Using Inbuilt Option

    Go to Settings > Discussion.
  • angle-right
    Under "Default article settings," uncheck "Allow people to post comments on new articles."
  • angle-right
    Make sure to uncheck "Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks) on new articles," if you want to disable pingbacks and trackbacks.

    Click "Save Changes" button.

The above steps will only disable comments on new posts only. The people can be still able to comment on older posts.

So, apply the following method, and this technique disables comments on all older posts.

    Go to Settings > Discussion.

    In the "Other comment settings" section, you can find the option "Automatically close comments on articles older than X days."
  • angle-right
    X is the number of days, and you can change it. Change it to 1 (one). The WordPress will automatically close comments on all posts older than one day.

    Click "Save Changes" button.

Using Plugin

    Install and activate "Disable Comments" plugin.
  • angle-double-right
    After plugin installation, go to Settings > Disable Comments.

    You can see the options to disable comments selectively (Posts, Pages, Media) or entirely.
  • angle-double-right
    Choose the option as per your need. In this instance, I want to disable WordPress comments entirely. So, I am choosing the "Everywhere" option.

    Click "Save Changes" button.

Keep in mind that this plugin not only completely disables comments on your blog, but it also hides all the comment settings. Also, it may hide all your existing comments depending on your theme.

When you deactivate this plugin, all the comments and comment settings will be restored.
