How to clear the font cache in Windows 10

Open the Run box. Type services.msc and then press Enter.

You can now see the Services window.

Search for and select this service: Windows Font Cache Service.

Now stop this service by clicking on the stop button at the top. Alternatively, you can right-click on it and press the stop option.

You also need to disable the service and here’s how: Double-click on the service. Open the drop-down list beside Startup type in the pop-up and select Disabled. Click OK.

Follow the steps above for this service: Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0.

Open File Explorer. Make the File Explorer show hidden files and folders.

Open the following folder: C: > Windows > ServiceProfiles > LocalService.

Press the Continue button in the pop-up.

Open AppData. Hit Continue.

Open Local. Hit Continue.

Delete all .dat files that start with FontCache.

Open the FontCache folder. Delete the entire contents of the folder. If you encounter problems with deletion, restart your PC and try again.

Now open the System32 folder in C: > Windows and search and delete the FNTCACHE.dat file.

Enable and start the services you have stopped earlier.

Restart your PC.

Delete icon and thumbnail cache in Windows 10

Remember that once you delete the cache, it will be rebuilt by Windows 10.

Let’s look at the steps to clear the icon cache.

Close all running applications.

Open the command prompt as an administrator.

Now you have to change the path. Enter this command:

cd c:\users\yourusername\appdata\local

Replace yourusername with your user name in the command and then press Enter.

Enter this command: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

Press Enter. Remember that you will see the blank screen temporarily. Follow the steps below:

Enter this command: delete iconcache.db and then press the Enter key.

Enter this command:

cd c:\users\yourusername\appdata\local\microsoft\windows\explorer

Replace yourusername with your user name in the command and then press Enter.

Remember that the location in the command is where the icon cache and thumbnail cache are located.

Enter this command: del iconcache* and then press the Enter key.

Now enter this command: dir iconcache* and then press the Enter key.

Note: If you see any iconcache files, it is because some apps are still running. In this case, you will need to close them and repeat the above steps.

Enter this command: explorer.exe and then press the Enter key.

Open the Start menu.

Type disk cleanup. You can now see the Disk Cleanup app. Hit it.
