How to Enable or Disable Compact Mode in Windows 10

As of build 21337, the Windows 10 File Explorer elements have additional padding between them.

If you don’t like it, you can activate the compact mode.

In this post, you will see the steps to do so. Let’s get started.

Activate compact mode

You can complete this task in two ways: choose the one you prefer.

Method #1

Open Run.

Type control folders and then press Enter.

You can now see the File Explorer Options.

Navigate to the View tab.

Locate and select Use compact mode.

Press the OK button.

That’s all.

If you do not want the compact mode, remove the above selection.

Method #2

Open the Registry Editor. Make a backup of the Registry before proceeding.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > Advanced.

In the right pane, you can see the DWORD UseCompactMode.

Double-click on it.

Enter 1 in the Value data field and then press the OK button.

That’s all.

If you want to disable compact mode, follow the steps above and replace 1 with 0.
