How to Enable and Use Chrome Read Later

The Google Chrome Read Later feature saves web pages for later reading. 

Let’s see how to enable and use this functionality on an Android and Windows 10 PC.

Activate and use read later

PC

Open the Google Chrome browser.

In the address bar, type chrome://flags and then press Enter.

In the search box at the top, type reading.

Now you will find the Chrome flag: Reading List. Open the drop-down list of the flag and select Enabled.

Click the Relaunch button to restart the browser.

After restarting, you will find the Reading list in the bookmarks bar. Here you can see the web pages you saved for later reading.

To save a web page, simply click on the star icon. You can see two options: “Add bookmark” and “Add to reading list.”

Hit the latter, that’s all.

Alternatively, you can complete the same task by using the following steps:

Right-click on the desired web page.

Hit the Add tab to reading list option.

That’s it. The saved tab is stored on the reading list.

When you open the Reading list in the bookmarks bar, you can see that the web page is in the Unread section.

When you hover over an item in the Unread section, you can see two symbols:

The check mark symbol marks the item as read.

The X symbol should delete the item.

The item marked as read will be available under the “Pages you’ve read.”

When you hover an item in this section, you will find two options:

The check mark symbol to mark the item as unread, the X symbol to delete an item.

Remember that a click on an item from the Unread section opens it and is marked as read.

Note:

You can disable this functionality if you’d like, and all you have to do is follow the above steps. But instead of choosing Enabled from the drop-down list, select Default.

Android Device

Open the Chrome app.

In the address bar, type chrome://flags and then press Enter.

In the search box above, type reading.

Now you can find the Reading List flag and its drop-down list.

Open it and select Enabled.

Press the Relaunch button.

That’s it. The feature read later is activated.

Here’s how you can use it:

Open the desired web page.

Hit the three vertical points in the upper right corner.

Tap the star icon.

You will now see the Reading list option. Click on it and the web page has been added to the reading list.

To find your reading list, follow these steps:

Hit the three vertical points in the upper right corner.

Hit Bookmarks.

Now you can see the Reading list. Click on it, and you can see the web pages you saved in the Unread section.

Click on an item in the Unread section to open it. Remember that in this case, the item will be marked as read and moved to the Read section.

Press the three vertical dots next to an item in the Unread section, and you can find these options: Mark as read, select, and Delete.

The first serves to mark the item as read, the second to select it, and the third to delete it.

Notes:

The item in the “Read” area only have the “Select” and “Delete” options.

You can disable this feature at any time by following the steps above. But instead of choosing Enabled, click Default.

Long pressing an item will select it.

You can remove multiple items at once. Select the items and then press the trash can icon at the top.

You can also open item(s) in Incognito mode. Select the item(s) and then press the three vertical dots at the top. Click Open in incognito tab.
