I have seen many failed login attempts recently at Technology Hint. So, I decided to change WordPress login URL.
Because, when you change the default login URL to custom, it will reduce the failed login attempts (I have seen this on my site).
There are many plugins out there to do this task. In today's post, we will see the “WPS Hide Login” plugin.
I’m using this plugin here at Technology Hint. This free lightweight plugin makes this task easier and here are the steps.
Change WordPress Login URL
- Install and activate the plugin. If you are a beginner, then you can check it out our plugin installation guide.
- Navigate to the Settings > General.
- At the bottom, you can see a new field “Login URL”.
- Enter the desired URL that you can remember but no one would able to guess.
- Click on "Save Changes" button to activate the new URL.
Make a note of the URL and kept in a secure place.
That’s it. From now on, you need to use your new login URL to login to your site.
After I installed this plugin, the number of failed login attempts got reduced to almost nothing.
Here are some of the questions which you may want to ask:
What will happen to the default login URL?
The plugin makes the default login URL inaccessible. So, when someone tries to access the wp-admin, they will get a message like this:
If someone tries to access your wp-login.php, they will get a 404 error page.
What happens when I delete this plugin?
When you delete the plugin, the default login URL become accessible and you can use it for login.
If you have any login problem because of this plugin, then delete or deactivate the plugin. So far, I have faced no issues. So I hope you also don't have any issues.
I hope you changed the login URL of your WordPress blog. If not, take action immediately and secure your blog.
