How to Change WhatsApp Theme and Chat Wallpaper

In this post, you’ll see:

Here, I’m using WhatsApp Web, Android, and iPhone. Let’s start.

How to Change WhatsApp Theme

Android

Launch the WhatsApp app. Tap the three vertical dots at the top right.

Select Settings > Chats.

Tap Theme under the Display section. You can now see these three options:

  • Light – Disable dark theme.
  • Dark – Enable the dark theme.
  • System default – This applies the state of the Android dark mode to WhatsApp. For instance, WhatsApp will also be in the dark theme if your Android device is in dark mode.

Tap OK, and that’s it.

iPhone

WhatsApp is on a dark theme if the iPhone is in dark mode.

If the iPhone isn’t in dark mode, then WhatsApp will also not be in the dark.

Depending on your wish, turn on or off the iPhone dark mode, and the change will reflect on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp Web

Open WhatsApp Web. Click on the three vertical dots on the top left sidebar.

Select Settings between “Starred” and “Log out.” Select Theme.

You can now see these three options in the pop-up:

  • System default – Apply the system’s dark mode state to WhatsApp Web. For instance, if your system isn’t in dark mode, the latter is also not in dark theme.
  • Dark – Turn on the dark theme.
  • Light – Turn off the dark theme.

Pick the one you prefer and click the OK button.

That’s all.

How to Change WhatsApp Chat Wallpaper

You can change the chat wallpaper for the individual or all chats. Let’s see both, starting with the former.

How to Change Chat Wallpaper for an individual Chat

Android

Open the chat in the Chats tab. Tap the three vertical dots at the top right.

Select Wallpaper.

If you’re on a dark theme, then you can see your current wallpaper, and beneath it, you can view “Change.” Tap on it.

Choose the wallpaper you prefer. If you like the default one, then select Default Wallpaper.

You may now see the preview. If you like it, select the Set Wallpaper button at the bottom.

In the pop-up, you’ll see these two options:

  • For this chat (contact or group name) – Apply the wallpaper only for this chat.
  • For all chats in (dark or light) theme – Applies wallpaper to all the conversations on the dark or light theme. It isn’t the case for conversations for which you set the custom wallpaper.

Here, I choose the former. Tap OK.

That’s all.

Notes

  • The following only applies if you’re in the dark theme. The slider beneath Wallpaper Dimming is for brightness. Slide it to the right to decrease the brightness and to the left to increase it.
