By default, your category archive page URL will be like this:
In the above URL:
"category" is called category base and it is the default category base for all categories of your blog.
The value you see in the place of "something" is called "Slug." It is the one that you have provided while creating a WordPress category.
Well, we know what is the category base right now. Let's see the steps to change or remove it.
Change Category Base on WordPress
You can quickly and easily change category base on WordPress, and you do not need a plugin to do that.
Here are the steps:
That is all. Now, your category archive page URL will be like this:
Make sure to set up a redirect from old category URL to new one.
Note: The default tag base is "tag." You can change tag base too from here (type the tag base you want in the field beside "Tag base" and then click on "Save Changes" button).
Remove Category Base on WordPress
I do not recommend removing category base because it makes the URL as a non-user-friendly URL.
However, if that is what you want to do, then follow the below steps.
If you have Yoast plugin installed on your blog, then you can use it to do this task.
That is all and do not forget to set up a redirect from old URL to New URL.
If you are not a Yoast plugin user or do not want to use it, then you can try it out this "Remove Category URL" plugin. No configuration is needed for this plugin to work.
Also, you do not need to do any redirection when using this plugin. The plugin will do that for you.
