How to Block an Email Address in Gmail

If you’re receiving unwanted emails from someone, then you can block that email sender.

When you block someone, their new email will be automatically moved to the “Spam” folder.

Let’s see the steps to block the email address in the Gmail desktop version (PC) and app (Android and iPhone).

How to Block an Email Address in Gmail

PC

You can do this task on the PC in two diverse ways. Pick the one you want. Let’s see what they are.

Method #1

Go to Gmail. Sign in, if not already.

Open the email from the sender whom you want to block.

Aside from “Reply,” you will see three vertical dots on the right side of the screen. Click on it.

Click on the Block “username” option.

In the confirmation pop-up, click “Block.”

To Unblock an Email Address

Click this URL (make sure you’re signed in to your account before clicking the URL). It’ll take you to the “Filters and Blocked Addresses” section.

You can see the blocked email addresses in “The following email addresses are blocked. Messages from these addresses will appear in the “Spam” section.

Click on “Unblock” beside the email address you want to unblock. In the confirmation pop-up, click “Unblock.”

Method #2

When you block an email address using this method, all the emails from the blocked email addresses will be moved to the “Trash” folder automatically.

If you’re okay with that, then follow the steps below:

Open the email from the sender whom you want to block.

Besides “Reply,” you will see three vertical dots.

Click on “Filter messages like this.”

By default, you’ll see the email address you want to block filled up in the “From” field.

Notes

1. There are instances (like: “Google Alerts” emails) in which you see the empty “From” field. In that case, proceed with the following steps.

2. If you want to block over one email address, then you can add it in the “From” field like this:

1@gmail.com|2@gmail.com

Click on “Create filter.”

Select the “Delete it” option.

Select the “Also apply filter to matching conversations.” option. Select this option only if you want the existing emails from the sender to be moved to the Trash.

Click on the “Create filter” button.

That’s all. All existing emails from the blocked sender will be moved to Trash. All future emails from the blocked sender will be moved there automatically.

To Unblock an Email Address: Go to this URL (make sure you’re signed in to your Google account before clicking the URL). It’ll take you to the “Filter and Blocked Addresses” section.

You’ll see the filter you’ve created in the “The following filters are applied to all incoming mail” section.

Click on “delete” beside the filter you want to delete.

In the confirmation pop-up, click “OK.”

Android or iPhone

Open the Gmail app.

Find and open the email from the sender whom you want to block.

Tap the three vertical dots (Android) or three horizontal dots (iPhone) which is beside the “Reply.”

Tap the Block “username” option.

If you want to unblock it, follow the steps below:

Open the email of the sender whom you’ve blocked.

Tap the three vertical dots (Android) or three horizontal dots (iPhone) which is beside the “Reply.”

Tap the Unblock “username” option.
