How to Pin WhatsApp Chat

“Pin chat” feature lets you pin chats (contact and group). If you pin a chat, you can access it easily and quickly since it stays at the top of the Chats tab.

Remember:

  • The pinned chats will remain at the top until you unpin them.
  • If you see a Pin symbol on the chat, then it means that it is a pinned chat.
  • You can pin only a maximum of 3 conversations.

With that said, let’s see the steps to pin.

Android

Open WhatsApp. If you wish to pin a chat, then long-press it.

If you wish to pin many conversations, then long-press a chat you want to pin. And then hit remaining chats that you wish to pin.

Now, you can see the “Pin” icon at the top. Hit it.

To Unpin – Select the pinned chat(s) that you want to unpin. Hit the “Remove pin” icon at the top.

iPhone

Open WhatsApp. Tap “Chats” if you’re not in it already. Swipe the chat you want to pin to the right.

Now, you can see the “Pin” option besides “Read or Unread.” Hit it.

To Unpin – Swipe the pinned chat you want to unpin to the right. Hit “Unpin.”

How to Mute WhatsApp Chat

“Mute” feature lets you mute the contact and group chats.

When you mute a chat, then it’ll not play a notification sound, vibrate, and show the notification when it receives a message.

Keep in mind that the muted chat will remain the same until you unmute it or the chosen duration expires. Let’s see the steps.

Android

Open WhatsApp.

If you want to mute a chat, then long-press it. If you want to mute many conversations, then long-press the one you want to mute and then hit the remaining ones you want to mute. If you want to mute all chats, then long-press a conversation, hit three vertical dots, and then tap “Select all.”

Now, at the top, you can see the “Mute” icon. Tap it. In the pop-up, choose the duration you prefer. The durations are – 8 hours, 1 week, and 1 year.

Select “Show notifications,” if you want the notifications to be shown when you receive a message from the selected chat(s). Else leave it intact. Hit “Ok.”

Or you can mute a single chat using the below steps too.

Open the WhatsApp chat you want to mute. Tap the name at the top.

Hit on “Mute notifications.” Choose the duration you want. Select the “Show notifications” if you prefer. Tap “Ok.”

Remember that in the “Chats” tab, if you see a “Mute” symbol on the chat, then that’s a muted chat.

Let’s see how to unmute a muted WhatsApp chat.

In the WhatsApp, select the muted chat(s) you want to unmute. Hit the “Volume” icon at the top.

Or you can unmute a single conversation using the below step too.

Open WhatsApp. Hit the muted chat you want to unmute. Tap the name at the top. Disable the switch beside “Mute notifications.”

Launch WhatsApp. Slide the chat you want to mute to the left. Hit More > Mute.

In the pop-up, you can see three durations as options – 8 hours, 1 week, and 1 year. Hit the one you prefer.

Note: In the “Chats” tab, if you see a “Mute” symbol on a chat, then that’s a muted chat.

To Unmute – Slide the muted chat you want to unmute to the left. Hit More > Unmute.

Alternate Methods

Method #1

Open the chat you want to mute. Hit the name at the top. Hit “Mute.” Now, you can see three duration. Pick the one you wish.

To Unmute – Open the chat you want to unmute. Tap the name at the top. Hit “Muted.” Tap “Unmute.”

Method #2

Long press the chat you like to mute. You can see “Mute” option now. Hit it. Choose the duration you prefer.

To Unmute – Long press the chat and then hit “Unmute.”


How to Hide WhatsApp Chat

Android

You can hide WhatsApp chat (contact or group) from the “Chats” tab and here’s how:

Open WhatsApp.

If you want to hide a chat, then long-press it. If you want to hide multiple conversations, then long-press the one you wish to hide and then hit the remaining ones you prefer to hide. If you want to hide all chats, then long-press a conversation and then tap three vertical dots at the top and then hit “Select all.”

Now hit the “Archive” icon. That’s it. The chat(s) you’ve chosen are hidden successfully.

Alternatively, you can hide all chats at once using the below steps:

Hit three vertical dots > Settings > Chats > Chat history > Archive all chats (you can see this option only if all the conversations are not archived). In the confirmation pop-up, tap “Ok.”

Note: The hidden conversation automatically gets unhide if it receives a message or a message is sent from it.

To See Hidden Chats

In the “Chats” tab, you can see “Archived (X).” X denotes the number of conversations you’ve hidden. Hit it, and you can see all your archived conversations.

To Unhide Hidden Conversations

Select the hidden chat(s) you wish to unhide. You can select the conversation(s) in the same way you do for the archive. Hit the “Unarchive” icon at the top.

Alternatively, you can unarchive all chats at once using the below steps:

Tap three vertical dots > Settings > Chats > Chat history > Unarchive all chats (you can see this option only if all the conversations are archived). In the confirmation pop-up, hit “Ok.”

iPhone

Launch WhatsApp. Hit the “Chats” tab at the bottom if you’re not already in it. Slide the chat you want to archive to the left. Hit the “Archive” option.

  1. Slide the chat you want to archive to the left side completely and it’ll be archived.
  1. Long press the chat you want to archive, and you can see the “Archive” option on the menu. Hit it.

If you want to hide single, many or all WhatsApp chats, follow the below steps:

Open WhatsApp and then hit the “Chats” tab. Hit the “Edit” option at the top left. Select the chat(s) you want. Hit the “Archive” option at the bottom left.

Open WhatsApp. Tap Settings > Chats > Archive All Chats. In the pop-up, hit “Archive All.”

To See Archived Chats

Place your finger on the blank space between “Broadcast Lists” and “New Group.” Swipe down twice. Now you can see “Archived Chats.” Hit it.

Go to the “Archive Chats” screen using the above steps and then follow any of the below methods:

  1. Slide the chat to the left completely.
  1. Long-press the chat you want to unarchive. You can see the “Unarchive” option. Hit it.
  1. Slide the chat to the left and you can see the “Unarchive” option. Tap it.

Note: you can follow the steps only if all your chats are archived.

Launch WhatsApp. Hit on Settings > Chats > Unarchive All Chats.


How to Add WhatsApp Chat Shortcut to Android Home Screen

Note: If you want to add WhatsApp shortcut to the Android home screen, see this guide.

If you want to add the shortcut of a WhatsApp chat (contact or group) to the home screen of your Android device, then follow the below steps:

​Open WhatsApp. In the “Chats” tab, tap the chat you want.

Note: In case, if you don’t have a chat for the contact you prefer in the “Chats” tab, then tap on the “New chat” icon at the bottom. And then tap on the contact you prefer.

Tap the three vertical dots at the top right. Tap “More,” which you can find beneath “Wallpaper.” Hit “Add shortcut,” which you can find beneath “Export chat.”

In the “Add to Home screen” pop-up, tap the “Add automatically” option. That’s all. Now, you can see the chat shortcut on the home screen of your Android device.

Notes:

  • Alternate way: Long press the chat. Hit three vertical dots at the top right. Tap the “Add chat shortcut” option. In the pop-up, tap “Add automatically.”
  • Tap on the chat shortcut to open the chat.
  • You can change the name and icon of the chat shortcut. Also, note that you can remove the shortcut.

How to Quote WhatsApp Message

What is WhatsApp Reply Feature?

“Reply” feature lets you quote WhatsApp message and reply to that quoted message.

It is useful, especially when you’re receiving many messages continuously in a conversation, and you want to reply to a specific message.

Let’s see the steps to quote a WhatsApp message.

Android

Open the WhatsApp chat (contact or group) and then long-press the message you want to quote. Tap on the “Reply” icon, which you can find beside the “Star” icon.

Now, you can see the preview of the quoted message which has the name of the sender at the top. And the cursor at the compose box. Type your reply and hit the “Send” icon.

iPhone

Open the WhatsApp chat (contact or group) and long-press the message you like to quote. In the pop-up, choose the “Reply” option, which you can find between “Star” and “Forward.”

Now, you can see the preview of the quoted message which has the name of the sender at the top. And the cursor at the compose box. Type your reply and hit the “Send” icon.

Notes (Apply for Android and iPhone):

  • An alternate way to quote a WhatsApp message: Slide the message you want to quote to the right side. The rest is the same as the above steps.
  • Not only text, but you can also quote any media type.
  • You can’t quote more than a message at a time.
  • You can’t quote part of a message.
  • Once you send the quoted message, tap on it, and you’ll see its original message in the conversation.
  • If you don’t want to send the quoted message while seeing the preview, then click “X” in the preview.
  • You can quote not only the message of others, but you can quote your message too.

WhatsApp Web

Here, we will see the steps to quote a WhatsApp message on WhatsApp Web. Let us see the steps.

In the WhatsApp web, open the chat which has the message you want to quote.

Hover the mouse over that message. Now, you can see a “Down arrow.” Hit it.

You can see the “Reply” option. Click on it.

You can view the preview of the quoted message which has the sender name at the top. You can also see the “X” icon on the right side, which you can use to close the preview. And the cursor is at the compose box.

Type your reply and then hit “Send” icon.

How to Reply Privately to a Message on WhatsApp Group

Android

In the group chat, long-press the message for which you want to reply privately. Now, hit the three vertical dots at the top. Tap the “Reply privately” option.

Now, you can see the preview of the quoted message which has the sender and group name at the top. And the cursor at the compose box. Type your reply and hit the “Send” icon.

In the group chat, long-press the message for which you want to reply privately. Hit More > Reply Privately.

Now, you can see the preview of the quoted message which has the sender and group name at the top. And the cursor at the compose box. Type your reply and then hit the “Send” icon.

WhatsApp Web

Here is how you can reply privately to a message on WhatsApp group:

In the WhatsApp group, hover over the message for which you want to reply privately.

Hit the “Down arrow.” Click on the “Reply privately” option.

Now you can see the preview of the quoted message in the WhatsApp chat screen of the sender. At the top of it, you can see the sender and group name. The “X” on the right side can close the preview. You can also view the cursor at the compose box.

Type your reply and then click on “Send” icon.
