How to Quote WhatsApp Messages

What is the WhatsApp Reply Feature

The WhatsApp feature “Reply” allows you to quote a WhatsApp message and reply to that quoted message.

It’s useful, especially when you’re receiving many messages continuously in a conversation, and you want to reply to a specific message.

Let’s see the steps to quote a WhatsApp message.

Android

Open a WhatsApp chat (contact or group).

Long-press the message you want to quote.

Tap on the “Reply” icon, which you can find beside the “Star” icon.

You can now see a preview of the quoted message which has the name of the sender at the top. And the cursor at the compose box.

Type your reply and hit the “Send” icon.

iOS

Open a WhatsApp chat (contact or group).

Long-press the message you would like to quote.

In the pop-up, choose the “Reply” option, which you can find between “Star” and “Forward.”

You can now see a preview of the quoted message which has the name of the sender at the top. And the cursor at the compose box.

Type your reply and hit the “Send” icon.

Notes (Apply for Android and iPhone):

  • An alternate way to quote a WhatsApp message: Slide the message you want to quote to the right side. The rest is the same as the above steps.
  • Not only text, but you can also quote any media type.
  • You can’t quote more than one message at a time.
  • You can’t quote part of a message.
  • Once you send the quoted message, tap on it and you’ll see its original message in the conversation.
  • If you don’t want to send the quoted message while seeing the preview, then click “X” in the preview.
  • You can quote not only the chat message of others, but you can quote your message too.

WhatsApp Web

On the WhatsApp web, open the specific chat that has the message you want to quote.

Hover the mouse over that message.

Now, you can see a “Down arrow.” Hit it.

You will see the “Reply” option. Click on it.

You can view a preview of the quoted message which has the sender’s name at the top. You can also see the “X” icon on the right side, which you can use to close the preview. And the cursor is at the compose box.

Type your reply and then hit the “Send” icon.

How to Reply Privately to a Message on WhatsApp Group

Android

In the group chat, long-press the message for which you want to reply privately.

Now hit the three vertical dots at the top.

Tap the “Reply privately” option.

You can now see a preview of the quoted message which has the sender and group name at the top. And the cursor at the compose box.

Type your reply and hit the “Send” icon.

iOS

In the group chat, long-press the message for which you want to reply privately.

Hit More > Reply Privately.

You can now see a preview of the quoted message which has the sender and group name at the top. And the cursor at the compose box.

Type your reply and then hit the “Send” icon.

WhatsApp Web

Here’s how you can reply privately to a message on the WhatsApp group:

In the group, hover over the message for which you want to reply privately.

Hit the “Down arrow.”

Click on the “Reply privately” option.

You can now see a preview of the quoted message on the WhatsApp chat screen of the sender. At the top of it, you can see the sender and group name. The “X” on the right side can close the preview. You can also view the cursor in the compose box.

Type your reply and then click on the “Send” icon.

How to Pin a WhatsApp Conversation

The “Pin chat” feature allows you to pin chats (contact or group).

If you pin the chat, you can access it easily and quickly since it stays at the top of the “Chats” tab.

Remember:

  • The pinned chats will remain at the top until you unpin them.
  • If you see a Pin icon on the chat, then it means that it’s a pinned chat.
  • You can only pin a maximum of three conversations.

With that said, let’s see the steps to pin on an Android smartphone and iOS.

Android

To Pin

Launch WhatsApp.

If you wish to pin an individual chat, then long-press it. If you wish to pin many conversations, then long-press the chat you want to pin. Then hit the remaining chats that you wish to pin.

Now you can see the Pin icon at the top. Hit it.

To Unpin

Select the pinned chat(s) that you want to unpin.

Hit the “Remove pin” icon at the top.

iOS

To Pin

Launch WhatsApp.

Tap “Chats” if you’re not in it already.

Swipe the chat you want to pin to the right.

Now, you can see the “Pin” option beside “Read or Unread.” Hit it.

To Unpin

Swipe the pinned chat you want to unpin to the right.

Hit “Unpin.”

How to Mute a WhatsApp Conversation

The “Mute” feature allows you to mute your contacts and group chats.

If you mute the chat, then it’ll not play a notification sound, vibrate, or show the notification when it receives a message.

Keep in mind that the muted chat will remain the same until you unmute it or the chosen duration expires. Let’s see the steps.

Android

Launch WhatsApp.

If you want to mute a chat, then long-press it. If you want to mute many conversations, then long-press the one you want to mute and then hit the remaining ones you want to mute. If you want to mute all chats, then long-press the conversation, hit the three vertical dots, and then tap “Select all.”

At the top, you can see the “Mute” icon. Tap on it.

In the pop-up, choose the duration you prefer. The durations are – 8 hours, 1 week, and Always.

Select “Show notifications” if you want the notifications to be shown when you receive a message from the selected chat(s). Else leave it intact.

Hit “OK.”

Alternatively, you can mute a single chat using the steps below.

Open the WhatsApp chat you want to mute.

Tap the name at the top.

Enable “Mute notifications.”

Choose the duration you want.

Select “Show notifications” if you prefer.

Tap “Ok.”

That’s all.

Remember that in the “Chats” tab, if you see a “Mute” symbol on the chat, then that’s a muted chat.

Let’s see how to unmute a muted WhatsApp chat.

On WhatsApp, select the muted chat(s) you want to unmute.

Hit the “Volume” icon at the top.

Alternatively, you can also unmute a single conversation using the steps below.

Launch WhatsApp.

Hit the muted chat you want to unmute.

Tap the name at the top.

Disable “Mute notifications.”

iOS

Launch WhatsApp.

Slide the chat you want to mute to the left.

Hit More > Mute.

In the pop-up, you will see three durations as options – 8 hours, 1 week, and Always. Hit the one you prefer.

That’s it.

Note that in the “Chats” tab, if you see a “Mute” symbol on the chat, then that’s a muted chat.

To Unmute – Slide the muted chat you want to unmute to the left. Hit More > Unmute.

Alternate Methods

Method #1

To Mute

Open the chat you want to mute.

Hit the name at the top.

Hit “Mute.”

Now, you can see three durations. Pick the one you wish.

To Unmute

Open the chat you want to unmute.

Tap the name at the top.

Hit “Muted.”

Tap “Unmute.”

Method #2

Long press the chat you would like to mute.

You can see the “Mute” option. Hit it.

Choose the duration you prefer.

To Unmute – Long press the chat and then hit “Unmute.”

How to Add WhatsApp Chat Shortcut on Home Screen

Android

Note: If you want to add a WhatsApp shortcut to the Android home screen, see this guide.

‚ÄčOpen WhatsApp.

In the “Chats” tab, tap the chat (contact or group) you want. If you don’t have a chat for the contact you prefer in the “Chats” tab, then tap on the “New chat” icon at the bottom. Then tap on the contact you prefer.

Tap the three vertical dots at the top right.

Tap “More,” which you can find beneath “Wallpaper.”

Hit “Add shortcut,” which you can find beneath “Export chat.”

In the “Add to Home screen” pop-up, tap the “Add automatically” option.

That’s all. You can now see the chat shortcut on the home screen of your Android device.

Notes

  • Alternate way: Long press the chat. Hit the three vertical dots at the top right. Tap the “Add chat shortcut” option. In the pop-up, tap “Add automatically.”
  • Tap on the chat shortcut to open the chat.
  • You can change the name and icon of the chat shortcut. Also, note that you can remove the shortcut.

iPhone

Note: The steps below only apply to the chat of a contact.

Open the “Shortcuts” app on your iPhone.

Make sure you’re on the “My Shortcuts” tab. Hit “All Shortcuts.”

Tap “+” at the top right.

Hit the “Add Action” button.

Hit Apps > WhatsApp.

Tap “Send Message via WhatsApp.”

In the “Recipient” field, you can see “+” icon. Hit it.

Tap the WhatsApp contact you prefer.

Hit “Next” at the top right.

Provide a name for the shortcut. I suggest that you provide the contact name as the shortcut name.

Tap “Done” at the top right.

Now, tap the three horizontal dots button on the shortcut you’ve created.

Hit the “Add to Home Screen” button.

Hit “Add” at the top right.

That’s it. You can see the chat shortcut on the iPhone home screen.

How to Hide WhatsApp Chat

Android

You can hide the WhatsApp conversation from the “Chats” tab and here’s how:

Open WhatsApp.

If you want to hide a chat, then long-press it.

Want to hide multiple conversations? Long-press the one you wish to hide and then hit the remaining ones you prefer to hide.

Want to hide all chats? long-press a conversation, tap the three vertical dots at the top, and then hit “Select all.”

Hit the “Archive” icon.

That’s it.

Alternatively, you can hide all chats at once using the steps below:

Hit the three vertical dots at the top of WhatsApp.

Tap Settings > Chats > Chat history > Archive all chats (you can see this option only if all the conversations aren’t archived).

In the confirmation pop-up, tap “Ok.”

Note: The hidden conversation automatically gets unhide if it receives a message or a message is sent from it.

In the “Chats” tab, you can see “Archived (X).”

X denotes the number of conversations you’ve hidden. Hit it, and you can see all your archived conversations.

To Unhide Hidden Conversations

Select the hidden chat(s) you wish to unhide. You can select the conversation(s) in the same way you do for the archive.

Hit the “Unarchive” icon at the top.

Alternatively, you can unarchive all chats at once using the steps below:

Tap on the three vertical dots > Settings > Chats > Chat history > Unarchive all chats (you can see this option only if all the conversations are archived).

In the confirmation pop-up, hit “Ok.”

iPhone

Launch WhatsApp.

Hit the “Chats” tab at the bottom if you’re not already in it.

Slide the chat you want to archive to the left.

Hit the “Archive” option.

That’s all.

Alternate Ways

  1. Slide the chat you want to archive to the left side completely and it’ll be archived.
  1. Long press the chat you want to archive and you will see the “Archive” option on the menu. Hit it.

If you want to hide a single, many or all WhatsApp chats, follow the steps below:

Open WhatsApp.

Hit the “Chats” tab.

Hit the “Edit” option at the top left.

Select the chat(s) you want.

Hit the “Archive” option at the bottom left.

To Archive All Chats

Open WhatsApp.

Tap Settings > Chats > Archive All Chats.

In the pop-up, hit “Archive All.”

See Archived Chats

Place your finger on the blank space between “Broadcast Lists” and “New Group.”

Swipe down twice.

You can now see “Archived Chats.” Hit it.

Unarchive Chats

To Unarchive a Single Chat

Go to the “Archive Chats” screen using the steps above. Then follow any of the following methods:

  1. Slide the chat to the left completely.
  2. Long-press the chat you want to unarchive. You can see the “Unarchive” option. Hit it.
  3. Slide the chat to the left and you will see the “Unarchive” option. Tap on it.

To Unarchive All Chats

Note: You can only follow the steps if all your chats are archived.

Launch WhatsApp.

Hit on Settings > Chats > Unarchive All Chats.

How to Convert WhatsApp Voice Messages to Text

There are some cases where you can’t hear the WhatsApp voice message. For instance, you’re in a Theater, and you don’t have headphones with you.

In such cases, turning the WhatsApp voice message to text is useful.

WhatsApp for Android has no built-in option for this task, and third-party apps are the only way.

Without further ado, let’s see the steps.

Install and open the Transcriber for WhatsApp app.

Tap the three vertical dots at the top right and then hit “Settings.”

Play with the options as you wish.

Once you’re done, start WhatsApp.

Open the chat with the voice message that you want to convert to text.

Long press the voice message.

Tap the “Share” icon at the top.

Now you can see many options. Two options belong to this app.

The first plays the voice message, and the second turns voice message to text.

First Option

Choose “Play voice message in incognito.” Give permission. In the pop-up, tap the “Play” icon to play the voice message.

Second Option

Choose “Transcribe.” In the pop-up, tap “Show permissions.” Give permission. That’s all. The app will start the process. Once done, you can see the text.

Note: The app does the task well. But I got an error like the server is down when I tried this app.

How to Log Out of WhatsApp

Android Phone

WhatsApp for Android doesn’t have the “log out” option.

However, you can log out of WhatsApp by clearing its data.

Before proceeding with clearing your data, back up WhatsApp.

Once you’ve cleared your WhatsApp data, you’ll be on the welcome screen of WhatsApp.

If you wish, you can get into your WhatsApp account after the verification process.

iPhone

Like Android, WhatsApp for iPhone doesn’t have the “log out” option.

However, you can do the log out by uninstalling the WhatsApp app. Take a backup before proceeding with the uninstall.

WhatsApp Web

On WhatsApp Web, click on the three vertical dots at the top.

You will see the “Log out” option. Hit it, and that’s all.

How to Sign Out of WhatsApp Web Remotely

You can remotely log out of WhatsApp Web. Here are the steps on how to do that on your Android phone and iPhone:

Android

Open WhatsApp Messenger on your Android device.

Hit the three vertical dots at the top.

Hit “WhatsApp Web.”

You can see the devices you’ve logged in to. Hit the one you prefer.

Hit “Log Out” in the confirmation pop-up to sign out from that device.

If you want to log out from all devices at once, then hit the “Log out from all devices” option.

Tap the “Log Out” option in the confirmation pop-up.

iPhone

To log out from all devices at once, follow the steps below:

Open the WhatsApp app.

Hit Settings > WhatsApp Web/Desktop.
