How to Add or Remove Desktop Icons on Windows 10

In Windows 10, you can see the “Recycle Bin” icon, one of the Desktop Icons, on the desktop by default.

If you want to add other Desktop Icons (Computer, User’s Files, Network, and Control Panel), follow the below steps:

Open Run Command. In it, type ms-settings:themes and then press the “Enter” key. You’ll be in the “Themes” section. Click the “Desktop icon settings” link in the “Related Settings” section.

Now, you can see the “Desktop Icon Settings” pop-up. Select the icon(s) that you want to add to the desktop. Hit the “Ok” button at the bottom.

How to Remove Desktop Icons on Windows 10

Go to the “Desktop Icon Settings” pop-up. Unselect the icon(s) that you want to remove. Click the “Ok” button at the bottom.


How to Change Desktop Icons Size on Windows 10

Right-click on the empty area of the desktop. In the context menu, hover the mouse over the “View” option. Now you can see three options:

  • Large icons
  • Medium icons
  • Small icons

Select the one you prefer, and you can see the change in all desktop icons size as per the option you chose.

Alternate Method

Scroll the mouse while pressing the “Ctrl” key. Scrolling up makes icons larger, and scrolling down makes icons smaller.

Go to the folder you prefer. Scroll the mouse while pressing the “Ctrl” key. Scrolling up makes icons larger, and scrolling down makes them smaller.

Alternate Method

Open the folder you prefer, and then right-click on the blank area in it. Hover your mouse over the “View” option in the context menu. Now, you can see the following options:

  • Extra large icons
  • Large icons
  • Medium icons
  • Small icons
  • List
  • Details
  • Tiles
  • Content

Choose the option you prefer, and you can see the change.

Note: The change will apply to that specific folder only. For example: if you’re using the above steps in the “Downloads” folder, then you can see the change in that folder only.


How to Hide Desktop Icon (Individual or All at Once) on Windows 10

Individual

Right-click on the desktop icon that you want to hide. In the context menu, select the “Properties” option. Navigate to the “General” tab.

Select the “Hidden” option. Tap the “Ok” button at the bottom. In the pop-up, click “Continue.”

Notes:

  • To get back that individual desktop icon:

Make your PC to show hidden files. Now right-click on the icon you want to show on the desktop. Hit the “Properties” in the context menu.

Navigate to the “General” tab. Unselect “Hidden.” Click the “Ok” button at the bottom. Hit “Continue” in the pop-up.

  • This section doesn’t work for the inbuilt desktop icons (Recycle Bin, Control Panel, Computer, User’s Files, and Network).

All at Once

Right-click on the empty area of the desktop. In the context menu, hover your mouse over the “View” option. Now you can see “Show desktop icons.” Uncheck it.

Note: To show all desktop icons, select the “Show desktop icons” option. Note that this will not show the icons that are hidden using the above section until you make your computer to show hidden files.
